Well, Billy Bragg last night was a delight. Best venue in town by an absolute mile IMO.

Every time I see him live I'm amazed by his RANGE and the quality of his vocals all round. Played for a good two hours, mostly railroad songs with Joe Henry, but they also did a solo section each.

Pretty life affirming stuff truth be told.

Gig 2 of my 4-gigs-and-a-festival-in-November program was John Grant. As lovely as ever.

The support were called Arc Iris and musically and visually are best described as Bjork does prog-rock; avant-garde, time changes, crazy outfits and gold capes. Quite bizarre but in a nice way.

Saw Arc Iris at Green Door Store last week. Despite appalling sound they were very good. Their first album was good but a little patchy. The second is very good indeed. John Grant took them on tour with him after hearing the test pressing of their second album in the Bella Union shop in Brighton.

I was lucky enough to get a late ticket for Julia Holter/ Circuit Des Yeux and (the mighty) Richard Dawson on Monday at Shepherds Bush Empire. An unbelievably good show. Holter was phenomenal, I didn't think she could better than the first time I saw her at The Komedia in 2013 but she did, this tour has developed since I saw them at Oval Space about a year ago and the two new songs showed that her next album will keep up her unbelievable run of quality.

4th time I've seen Richard Dawson and he is still one of most talented, original and thoughful live acts in the land. Circuit Des Yeux didn't suffer from being in between them.

The tour hits Concorde 2 next Monday (without Richard Dawson. which is a huge shame) but on this evidence will still be a gig of the year.

Julia Holter last night smashed it again. I'd have liked to have heard a little more viola but you can't have everything eh.

It wasn't quite as amazing as the Spratelys Japs evening on Saturday but it's unfair to compare with so much love in the room at the very sold out GDS. This was their only ever gig so far, only Jo Sprately is left of the original line-up, now made up of Heavy Lamb (her son, Jesse), Crayola Lectern and Clowwns. And Tim was in the room to witness and join the love-in.

If you're unaware of the one off (so far) 1999 LP by Spratelys Japs have some of this.
