I never really get why people think that so many immigrants are spongers. Most of them do the jobs non-immigrants don't want to do. I imagine they prop up a fair portion of our economy allowing 'indigenous' spongers to go on having 18 children and drinking super tenants all day.

thats true. and alot of "illegal" immigrants also pay taxes, which seems to be the main arguement in favour of the amnesty. the system is full of holes and no communication between departments (i know people who have paid full tax and claim benefits at the same time)

so how about we grant amnesty to those that entered illegally but live and work in plain sight (ie getting taxed) and we remove all those that dont?

Spain granted an amnesty for 700k immigrants in 2005, and (as I understand it) thay have also been considering another one as clearly after the first one, Spain represented a green light to illegal immigrants who could get into Europe legitimately with an amnesty, so they have another 4 years worth to deal with.

Today Spain has 22% unemployment and forecasts are that it will get higher, (possibly up to 30%) and this is just one factor why Spain is struggling to get its sovereign debt sold. Ergo its credit rating has been reduced.

So, what does Spain's experience tell us? In simple terms obviously.

The amnesty for 700,000 immigrants whose jobs were in the black economy has not lead to a tax gold rush for the Spanish Treasury. Their tax revenues are sinking rapid.

Arguably those 700,000 jobs are now not available to local Spanish unemployed so they stay on the dole.

May be that explains some of the more intolerant attitudes of the Spanish?

So no its not a good idea.
