They have ruled out increasing income tax. They have also however, said that they are not going to raise the income tax thresholds until 2028 at least. This will mean, as wages and prices rise with inflation, the point in which we pay tax will not. It's a clever middle ground that avoids directly hurting people in the immediate (they don't earn more but pay more tax), but asks them to realistically pay a bit more as they earn more sooner.

The more interesting caveat than you or I paying a little more a little sooner, is the following:

One group who may be more significantly affected by a Labour proposal concerning income tax is private equity fund managers. Under what Labour describes as ‘closing a loophole’, the carried interest of private equity fund managers which is currently charged to capital gains tax (CGT), will instead be charged to income tax.

Example:

Ellie is an additional rate English taxpayer and receives carried interest of £500,000.
If the interest is taxable as a capital gain Ellie will pay CGT of £140,000 (28% on £500,000).
If the interest is instead taxable as income Ellie will pay income tax and National Insurance of £235,000 (45% tax and 2% National Insurance on £500,000).

Given the average age demographic of its readership there is next to zero chance to them getting into any of the countries suggested unless they have very deep pockets for one of those golden visa type countries. Another snag they have overlooked. Anyone of or near pensionable age considering moving to the likes of Australia, NZ, Canada, their state pensions would be frozen at the rate it was paid when leaving the UK. Such incidentals as having your state pension frozen at circa £221 a week for eternity until you depart this world is a detail they fail to mention. Not easy at all. Their demands cannot be afforded nor can the precedent be set, whilst Starmer also needs to demonstrate that he is strong enough to stand up to the unions. However, the doctors will be expecting to get close to the deal they want now the tories have been routed.

If, but equally importantly how, Starmer resolves this dispute could define the next 5 years for, from his perspective, better or for worse.

Both sides have said they're willing to sit around a table and negotiate. There's will from both sides to resolve this which is a significant change. Not easy, but not insurmountable either. If both sides are realistic, willing and act like grown ups....which they appear to be doing. ...this will get done.

I think it will get settled now. The whole country and beyond has known for the last year or two that a Labour government was incoming at some point. The Conservatives were trying to settle the dispute without paying up, so obviously that wasn't going to work. The reality is that the Union were waiting for the new Government to sweep into power and then they can settle the dispute, knowing that the agreement is going to last because this government will be in power for at least 5 years but history shows us it will probably be 10.

I for one am looking forward to the End of the era of noisy performance, and a politics which treads more lightly on our lives which the current make-up of the HoC (perhaps apart from Farage) should allow.
