Apart from the division game the Tory's are playing, they are seeing if they can get schools to obey their wishes. Targeting children with overtly nationalist propaganda and encouraging teachers to collude is a dangerous step on the way to a form of dictatorship: control by consent (referendums are a facet of this form of control).

Historians will identify this as a boundary testing phase.

The government is testing what the country will accept by challenging us to overlook things like their lying, overt cronyism, direct contradiction, profiteering and removal of rights. For the moment they are asking. If we don’t accept, they are pushing laws through to make the government legally untouchable, make Parliament powerless and remove the right to protest.
These aren’t random moves. They add up to something. This is a path.

Scare-mongering? I very much hope so. This is a dangerous time and moves like this are very concerning. It couldn't happen here?

Wtf, your kids are still in school? Surely it must be summer vacation soon?

Edit: Just googled it and apparently your kids have 6-7 weeks off compared to the 10 here. Silly. Let them out! Stop the musical torture! Free the kids!

Ignoring issues that have already been raised (as others have stated it better than I could!) 2 other things sprung to mind:

1. With Delta variant increasing in young people we are doing everything in schools to try and reduce transmission. Choirs and musical theatres currently have strict restrictions as singing spreads germs further etc. DofE encouraging classrooms full of kids to be singing is VERY irresponsible.

2. At times at schools I work in we have had days when the normal timetable has been dissolved and there have been "theme" days. These take weeks if not months of planning. Yet the DofE think that with 3 days notice teachers can plan/resource a day like this?? Clueless. I already know exactly what I will be teaching on Friday - it won't be this!

I asked my wife what her plans were for this at her own school, she knows nothing about it. Like you, she will be teaching on Friday. End of story.

Been doing a bit of reading...

- Nothing to do with the Government, the campaign has been round for a few years. Started by an ex policeman who was born in India, who trade marked it in 2005. Nothing sinister about it, just to me very archaic and (quite obviously) badly named.
- It has "links" with some Conservative MPs who have popularised it although I think at least one Labour MP has endorsed it too.
- A question was brought up in PMQs this year asking the PM for support who unfortunately instantly politicised it and used it to have a pop at the SNP.
- Yesterday, another Tory MP followed it up in parliament and asked Gavin Williamson to endorse it this year.
- Department of education put out tweet.

Another cock up by the Minister For Education who appears to one of those MPs who thinks everything is solved by waving a flag.

So to confirm, this silly song and the idea of making school kids sing it is nothing to do with the Government then?

The government is endorsing, promoting it and encouraging it. So yes, it has quite a lot to do with the government. They are promoting the whole day as an event called One Britain Day or some such nonsense.
You have literally just quoted a tweet by a government department promoting it :)

At some stage Mouldy, You may have to accept that you are trying to defend the indefensible.
Mate, I don't see it as indefensible, we all sung songs at schools that had a meaning, but most of them were religious meanings, I was too young to choose a religon, this is a reunite the country song and if we don't want to reunite the country, we have to ask ourselves why not???

No mate the issue does not lie with me & i dont see it as a political movement, why should i? I would still have the same opinion about this if it was a left wing idea, it may be for all i know. Just because someone disagrees with the sentiment & the way it is administered doesnt mean they are anti government, anti Britain anti Brexit bla bla bla. I cannot see your way of thinking about sunliminal preaching being just anti Brexit ect, anti
Boris, i think you are a little confused if the power of subliminal preaching works for your agenda it must work in the downfall for example Corbyn, Labour ect.
Sorry but its all a little " well if you dont get behind it you are a not supporting the country" agenda for me & i think people from all walks of life will have similar views.I just think it is a bad
Mate, again no one has told me why they won't back Britain, is it because they want Brexit to fail?
If it is we have some angry bitter people about and perhaps the EU should be their destination to fulfil their happiness?

As John McEnroe once said: “you can not be serious”.

We have THE most divisive Prime Minister in my memory, at least, and I’m 68 next month.

The values of tolerance and so on expressed in the song are in no way exhibited by our government and its actions. Hostile environment? Do me a favour.

The country in my view is more divided than ever, and Johnson is not the man to unite it!
Someone need to bring us together, sounds like sulky kids stuff if you ask me.

Please go and see a specialist, you are really embarrasing yourself yet again.
Don't forget to take your flag.
Really, you can not help yourself, you find the need to abuse all the time.

It’s complete bollocks pushed out my Boris and the other idiots to try and get the gullible to somehow ignore what bunch of pricks they are.

See again you only use your hate for Boris, this is not a real reason. Why do you not want to unite the country.

Which says more about you than it does about them. If I was you I'd get into pickling, move to the mountains and buy yourself a rifle.

You'll find a number of other self inclined patriots on Facebook.

Good Luck
Nothing wrong for sticking up for your country, can you imagine our war heroes having your attitude.::nono:

So I love my ska, but there are many political statements in the music, is that okay?
I was young and impressionable.
What is the difference........I will tell you.......Boris is?..... you are all anti Boris...give up your hate and fly the flag.

I said I see no joy
I see only sorry
I see no chance of your bright new tomorrow
So stand down Margaret
Stand down please
Stand down down down down down
Down down down down down
I say stand down Margaret
Stand down please
Stand down down down down down
Down down down down down
Stand down Margaret
Stand down please
Stand down Margaret
I say stand down Margaret
Stand down please
Stand down down down down down
Down down down down down
Down down down down down
Down down down down down
Down down down down down
You tell me how can it work
In this all white law
What a short sharp lesson,
What a third world war
I sometimes wonder
If I'll ever get the chance
Just to sit with my children
In a holiday jam
Our lives seem petty in your cold grey hands
Would you give a second thought
Would you ever give a damn, I doubt it
Stand down Margaret
Awar!
Everybody shout it
Stand down Margaret!
Work, white law
Shell shock
World war
War, war, war, war, war
War, war, war, war, war
War, war, war, war, war
War, war, war, war, war
War, war, war, war, war
Stand down please
Stand down Margaret
Stand down please
Stand down Margaret
I say stand down Margaret
Stand down please
Stand down Margaret
Stand down Margaret
Stand down please
Stand down Margaret
I say stand down Margaret
Stand down please
Stand down Margaret

I take it you were off your tits on Greed is Good, Plenty of Money, and There is no such thing as Society in the Thatcher years then.

(The song is crap and downright embarrassing, by the way).

No I wasn’t off my tits! I detested Thatcher but worked on the basis that she was competent but wrong, very wrong.

Johnson is just a complete and utter mess. And he is doing things in my view to appease the “red wall” (and in doing so is risking being patronising anyway) but which are going to upset the more liberal tories in places like Amersham - hostile environment, abandoning of food standards, seemingly, gunboat diplomacy most recently with this Ukraine/Russia navy thing. He is being deliberately divisive.

The song is awful.

But maybe your main mistake is thinking that Johnson is the man to unite the country. He’s a shambles and is going off on a right wing agenda wholeheartedly when he must know it will enrage large swathes of the population.

The accusation of divivisiveness can equally be made in the opposite direction. Ever since the Referendum there has been a hysterical reaction to just about anything done or suggested by anyone who played a part in the Leave campaign. Some of the posts on this thread are downright weird as people ratchet up the conspiracy rhetoric. We all know what this (and everything else) is really about.

This is a strategy from a CEO who is a man born in India who came to this country not able to speak the language. He has done well living here. But he has a romantic foreigner’s view or Britain, the kind of view I might be preach to the French if I moved there because I’m a Francophile. Strangely, this CEO seems to be profoundly ignorant of how both Scotland and Northern Ireland are also in Britain as he urges closed Scots school to join in with his silly song and cuts out Northern Ireland altogether (Johnson Style).

I suspect what he is trying to do is reunite Bradford which seems to be the only part of Britain he has any real knowledge about. I have some sympathy with this as it’s clear that some schools etc are only give a passing acknowledgment to the country they are based in as they concentrate on developing other languages and cultures in children rather than those of this country.

Perhaps he can keep his reuniting Bradford strategies local next time? The bloke running this is not aware that this sort of patriotism is ‘not British’ it’s ****ing weird, in the same way religious expression in an over evangelical way is not British just ****ing weird.

The politicisation is that the Tories have latched on to it because the introduction of the nationalist agenda has been so successful for them in Brexit and the recent election. However, in reality, they’ve just lost the vote of another swath of educated Tories in the South as they come to the realisation that this Government are the most incompetent bunch of muppets the Country has seen in over a century.

Saying our country is great is hardly preaching though.

But it's not just that though, is it? It's part of a wider culture war being waged on our children's education. See the current outrage in Government because institutions are daring to mention things in our history which were less than savoury, the criticism by Government ministers of the school curriculum which covers less appealing aspects of the nation's history (the Empire wasn't all railways and cricket).

If you truly love something then sometimes you have to give it some tough love and acknowledge it's failures. That's what true patriotism (which I'm all in favour of) would involve. Failing to acknowledge that is nationalism, which is a much more sinister concept than patriotism.

You keep on bringing up Brexit/the referendum on just about every political thread yet always insist you don't want to discuss it or any aspect of the outcome and issues raised by it on the thread specifically for that purpose ???
