Agreed that if Starmer is leading Labour the election gets turned on its head. Something is very wrong when despite the party having the talent of Starmer, Benn and Lammy it is headed up by Corbyn, McDonnell and Abbott. It's political suicide.

None of them have stood for the leadership. Starmer is very much a leading figure in the shadow cabinet and leadership structure. They’re all loyal to the party and stand by its current direction and leadership.

I see the Greens are suggesting we borrow £91B a year to tackle climate change. Not sure if that's responsible, it would be similar levels to which the Tories have piled on the credit card since 2010....

Would that be more or less irresponsible if all of humanity died out due to it being in-affordable to tackle climate change, despite all the resources needed to ensure we don't die out are already on the earth?

Capitalism is fine for a time, but it's kind of obsolete if the planet dies.

Cleverly trying to worn his way out this morning, what a pathetic joke of a man, defending the indefensible rather than just saying sorry on behalf of the whole party.
And then you get half wits like 2 professors who stick up for them and believe every word they say.
Truly extraordinary.

Complete joke. Nasty Party - always have been. Basically saying it’s okay for us to lie.

its madness, thats on top of the existing deficit too. all the parties seem to want to more borrow money without any indication of how they expect this to be paid back.

Must be rather frustrating being brighter, cleverer and more informed than the majority of the electorate.

I guess this was supposed to be a dig

The truth is I AM cleverer than the majority of the electorate - if education, qualifications and years of training mean anything.

And anyone who takes a reasonably broad media - in fact any regular contributor to this thread, on either side of the debate - is more informed than the average man in the street.

And yes, you’re quite correct - it is extremely frustrating.

This is not a trick question.

If we are at imminent risk of death, and the only way to save the planet was to borrow all the money in the world with no way in hell we can pay it back, would you choose to borrow the cash or would you accept your death?

Capitalism has not place when it comes to human survival.

The rail system in the Midlands works amazingly well, with punctual, clean, modern trains, great infastructure, and a Tory Mayor who is constantly pushing for rail extensions and improvements.

:lolol:

You are a card.

I bet you don't think anyone else goes near to the Midlands on this board and you are therefore free to post whatever crap enters your tiny head.

Until a year ago I was regularly consulting in an office in Colmore Circus in the centre of Birmingham and getting there by train. Birmingham New St is very nice since its redevelopment, which is good since it is overcrowded and subject to almost constant delays. New Street is, in fact, the fourth worst station in the WHOLE COUNTRY. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-45864908

You're right about development though. It's called HS2. Devised by the Tory government it is turning Birmingham city centre in to a building site, constricting the almost uncountable numbers of homeless people off their heads on Spice to roam the streets around New St, Moor St and Snow Hill. I say "roam", I mean "collapse on the pavement on the verge of death". And HS2? Overbudget by 22 BILLION and not delivering anything until 2031. All on the Tories' watch.

I'd say the government's rail policy country wide is a disaster and it's no better in the Midlands than anywhere else. I'd also say, given the number of aforementioned addicted homeless people, that your beloved mayor has his priorities wrong.

But I thought the deficit was eliminated as Boris said at the Tory party conference, or was he referring to the debt?

Seriously aside of government lies, I agree with you about debt to some extent, some extra debt to put us on a sustainable future should be considered.

That said, you are championing lower growth with Brexit, so maybe you need to reconsider your approach...

The terrible thing is, it WAS a good idea. Ten thousand gullible gammon dickheads will have retweeted / shared it, far and wide, to be enthusiastically lapped up by a million of their brethren.

Not one of them will pause to give two ****s whether it is accurate or not.

Must be rather frustrating being brighter, cleverer and more informed than the majority of the electorate.

I'd suspect one of those gammons is Two Professors

Given his views on what has caused the railway issues countrywide over the last decade he seems as well informed as next door's Jack Russell.

It's a balancing act though. It's fine, and absolutely correct, to do everything we can to tackle climate change but if every economy in the world is destroyed doing so it becomes some what pointless. The Greens £100bn a year nearly doubles our current borrowing and that's assuming the current borrowing isn't needed. The Greens also haven't explained, yet, how that £100bn is to be actually spent that will help. You can't make everybody in the world destitute while saving the planet ….. unless you fancy living in a cave.

I think you are giving Two Profs far too much credit. I'm willing to bet that if you threw a bone in next door's garden, the dog would find it :lolol:

spending billions to insulate UK homes is not going to save the planet, if we want to do this we should pay for it as we go. sustainable investment is wanted, something like nuclear power would be more worthwhile.

https://www.theguardian.com/environ...sis-11000-scientists-warn-of-untold-suffering

The world’s people face “untold suffering due to the climate crisis” unless there are major transformations to global society, according to a stark warning from more than 11,000 scientists.

“We declare clearly and unequivocally that planet Earth is facing a climate emergency,” it states. “To secure a sustainable future, we must change how we live. [This] entails major transformations in the ways our global society functions and interacts with natural ecosystems.”

There is no time to lose, the scientists say: “The climate crisis has arrived and is accelerating faster than most scientists expected. It is more severe than anticipated, threatening natural ecosystems and the fate of humanity.”

How much is it worth to try to prevent all this?

The way the major parties are going on you'd be pushed to realise there's was an issue at all.

i dont believe Johnson ever made that claim? i dont champion brexit, gave up long ago, and this is about parties policy. sensible policies on environment are possible and not all debt is bad if sustainable, offering measurable returns or efficiency improvements for the country.
