Study suggests Omicron cuts hospitalisation risk by two-thirds, compared to Delta. This pretty much aligns with everything we’ve seen out of South Africa so far. Presumably those going into hospital are also less sick and therefore less likely to die, so the compound effect on deaths should be huge, hopefully.

Let's back-of-the-envelope this. Suppose we began on 100k infections/day of delta (=50k cases). If omicron's hospitalisation risk is only 1/3 we'd need 300k infections/day to get the same number of hospitalisations. To get 6x the hospitalisations/day we'd need 1.8m infections/day

BBC reporting new data that suggests Omicron is milder being 30% less severe than Delta. Also 2 doses of vaccine gives substantial protection.

Was in a London hospital a few hours ago and spoke to the Doctor checking me over (nothing serious by the way).

They are currently working on the same basis, anecdotal of course. They are of course worried about the greatly increased transmissibility statistically and this area having a rubbish vaccine take up etc...

... but this is the good news thread.

Got an email Monday from the NHS updating me on extra steps for the clinically extremely vulnerable. Received a PCR test out by mail this morning for use if I get symptoms/ test positive on a LFT.

One of the Cystic Fibrosis nurses just called to make sure I'd received it and to let me know that the new medication is the absolute dogs bollocks.

My sis-in-law, Hodgkinson's recoverer, just got the same piece of correspondence - wonderful

Good news possibly , a 4th jab in the new year must shirley be enough to see off Covid-19 for good

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...-tackle-Omicron-following-Israel-Germany.html

Britain considers FOURTH Covid vaccination: Experts will examine evidence on rolling out ANOTHER jab after Israel and Germany announced second booster to tackle Omicron threat

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation is weighing up whether to introduce fourth doses
Israel and Germany have announced an extra round of boosters to ward off an Omicron surge
The fourth jab would likely come four months after the third if it gets the green light from health experts

When you say self-righteous, you mean thick

I think it's only fair that the government mandate that does that have declined the vaccine to date are no longer entitled to it.

We can then sit back, open a tube of pringles and watch the ensuing BINFEST from the facebook scientists.

While this is admittedly moving things off topic a little, and it’s also the sort of thing I’d never agree to - I do get the logic behind the idea of getting unvaccinated to pay for their treatment if the treatment is directly linked to a positive Covid infection. Obviously wouldn’t happen though.

Sorry. Back on topic.

They can't help themselves though can they: "There is also uncertainty about what will happen when Omicron reaches older age groups because most of those catching it and going into hospital so far have been under the age of 40.".

They could have put it positively, and said "The vast majority of the older population seem to be especially immune as most of those........under 40". That's my take on it!

In reply to this and not mentioned for discussion for obvious reasons, but NSW govt in Australia is considering this.

Wow........ that statement you would have preferred is taking this thread to a whole new level of false good news.
