After tomorrow there will not be a Men's cricket Test match held in England for another 342 days.

Beneath the prose, a message that several England bowlers shouldn’t now be playing, Bristow not keeping and Broad should’ve announced his retirement after the match (an unprofessional distraction).
'Broad should’ve announced his retirement after the match (an unprofessional distraction).'

Have to say I agree with this. Totally unprofessional, unless he discussed it with management/players and they thought it might unsettle Australia? If so, it didn't really work 🙄 If not, it was pretty disrespectful to his teammates.

I've got tickets for tomorrow. One final magical spell from Broad is written in the stars (maybe)

I went today. SHITTEST day of cricket ever
Me too. Awful day. Like a 0-0 which is called off after only 25 minutes with no shots on goal, cards, corners, f*** all….. and you still pay full price.
I don’t blame the Aussies, they’re playing for the result they wanted, they might even get a win now. I’m annoyed with England’s lacklustre approach in the first session, it reminded me of Lords. I think the guard of honour for Broad was another mistake, do it at the end, win the bloody match first.

Totally agree about the retirement announcement. It turned the morning session into a soppy appreciation of Broad instead of getting at the Aussies. Plus we chose to bat for 15mins so Broad could hit a boundary 🤦‍♂️ - all wrong in my book. Poor judgement from all concerned.

I was thinking of a football or rugby union analogy. In a proper tournament, total professionalism, the team and winning comes first.

An active first choice player announcing their retirement in or around a key knock out game, would be a distraction at that moment.

Almost certainly hasn’t cost us this test, but should’ve been announced after close of play day 5.

A bit early to make that call isn't it?

The weather may make it a moot point, but the Aussie start currently suggests we needed all the runs we could muster.

If anything I thought the Broad announcement might stir the crowd and the rest of the team, this hasn’t happened yet.

The non selection of Foakes and bringing back Ali are the key selection blunders which will cost us an Ashes win.

I’d have picked Bairstow as a specialist batsman and either played the young lad who debuted in the winter, or used Root as main spinner to give us the chance to play four seamers.

Stokes lack of bowling has been a major loss this series, which has meant balancing the side has been tough.

I also agree Tongue should have played ahead of Anderson here.

Yes, fair point, the Aussies are attacking the total really well.
For me it was more to do with the mindset - I think we created a mentality of celebration for Broad, whereas we could have come straight out bowling at them.
Maybe Broad will take 5 today🤞 ;))

I’m a fan of how Stokes has got this team batting , fantastic but 2 downsides are that their bowlers don’t get tired because we score so fast from so few overs and more to the point they’ve got 2 days to chase!! I don’t think any of the ‘record’ run chases at the oval are relevant because 2 days to get 380+ is doable

This series has once again shown what a great game 4/5 day game is. With the interest shown another opportunity to allocate some of the vast resources spent on The 100 in marketing County game and playing the games when people want to watch.
