I think they took the decision because they knew that Stokes wouldn't be able to bowl much and wanted to have five bowlers available which means that they favoured a 'batsman wicketkeeper' over a 'wicketkeeper batsman'.
That would make a certain amount of sense, except they picked Bairstow at 7 and didn't include an extra bowler in the first two matches.
I think they were just guilty of wishful thinking in that Bairstow would come back in and bat at the level he did for much of last season. Which is naive even before you factor in the horrible injury and the difference making him wicketkeeper makes.

The batsman wicketkeeper has not done that much in this test apart from gift Australia lots of runs through dropped catches.
His confidence has gone. The Brook catch showed that neither he nor his team-mates actually have confidence in his catching. He needs time out to build it up again.

Watching the compelling highlights on bbc2. A couple of mini highlights:

That Wood 6 and resulting crowd roar. Immense.

Carey failing to take that backpeddling difficult chance … the biased commentary were openly laughing :lolol:
Probably more amusing that Carey didn't just leave it to Boland in the first place who had a straight forward pouch.

Foakes was in the team as wicketkeeper all of last season, even when Bairstow was fit.
Which makes the decision to swap back, given how well Foakes had done, even more peculiar.
I'd be inclined to pick Tongue for the next match over Anderson if Robinson isn't fit. Not dropping any of Broad, Wood or Woakes given how they did in this game.
It’s too tempting to play bairstow at wk as it buys you a bonus specialist batsman.
not such a great plan when he spills a load.
and he was walking wicket from the off today.
The obvious replacement is foakes , although word is he has also spilled a few for Surrey this season.

i would play Anderson , Broad, woakes and wood at ot. Ollie could have a break.

It just doesn't make any sense. There's about 4 runs difference in their average. Foakes is a proper batsman. He plays at 5 for Surrey and averages 40.
I wouldn't blame him if his performances have been a bit down this season, the England team spent the last 12 months insisting he was their keeper, he played really well in a successful team, and then he's dumped for somebody who's had plenty of chances before in the role and hasn't played for the best part of a year. It's ridiculous.
As an aside, he will miss chances as well. The best catchers from all time have dropped chances they should have taken and always will do.

I’m not sure you can leave Anderson out at OT
Could possibly be his last test match there which could work both ways…

I’d take Broad, Anderson, Woakes and Wood, as long as Wood is fit. Harsh on both Tongue and Robinson but I feel Jimmy might have a magic few days.

Yes, there’s a perception that it is batsman Johnny or wk specialist Foakes.
That is not a fair reflection of Foakes’ batting talents or his record.
Given how Bairstow batted in this test, I would probably prefer Foakes’ more measured approach in the middle order.
[although we saw at edgbaston how devastating a batsman bairstow can be on his day ).

Not really, Robinson will be left out.
He’s picked up a few wickets but has been some way off his best.
Can only think injuries are the reason he’s been bowling at such a gentle pace.

Does anyone know the best place to watch todays highlights? I was unable to watch it (or listen) today so the first minutes I’ve missed since the first test. BBC only have the previous 3 days on iPlayer at the moment

BBC2 had highlights at 7pm. I assume for some sort rights reason, they can't put them on iPlayer for a day or two.

They're next on BBC4 tomorrow evening:

Bairstow should be absolutely nowhere near the 11 at OT, but he will be, he’s becoming the Harry Macguire of England red ball.
I would 100% want him in the team…as a pure batter. His record without the gloves is insane.
