The worry for England will be that they haven't managed to win this series as comprehensively as the scoreline suggests. I'm not convinced we will be favourites down under. The Australians haven't played well yet almost won the First Test and would have won the third.

The series over there (as I thought before this series) will be pretty even I think. Australia have worked a few of their batting problems out in this series, which was much needed & Swann will be much less of an influence. I'd imagine they'll beat us in Perth as well, so we'll need to win 2 of the other 4.

Weather forecast for today is good - gonna start raining tonight which will last into tomorrow morning and there is a yellow alert for heavy, possibly torrential downpours tomorrow interspersed with sunny spells.

One thing is for sure if someone fancies a career as an England spinner then the door is open, even if Swann goes on for a year or two. Just have to apply themselves and get noticed for the right reasons. Would be good to see someone like Rayner up his game. He knows how to hold a bat too.

Maybe Monty will get back in the frame if he sorts himself out, but might be too soon for the Ashes down under so will be interesting to see who the selectors opt for as cover for Swann.

Just read in The Times that Darren Lehmann has been fined 20% ( C. £2000 ) of his match fee for his gobbing off over Broad. Since when did coaches/managers of international sides actually get paid a match fee ? Surely they are employed on a contracted wage ? Still, nice for him to be told to shut up.

This!

Apart from 1 or 2 sessions during the series, I think Englands attitude during the Ashes has been pathetic and complacent. The neagtivity that Cook's captaincy exudes has clearly had effects on other players.

I haven't enjoyed the Series at all, and as already stated, apart from a couple of nightmare sessions I think Australia have deserved at the very least, to have tied the Series.

Well, I've been lambasted on these cricket threads for saying the same thing. The negativity and playing the percentages seems to be seeping into every part of this England set up, from the preparation of the pitches, to selection, batting, fielding, bowling changes.

It might be argued that England have no influence over what pitches are prepared.....yeah right.

Yesterday, Siddle came in as night watchman and with the new ball we had an extra cover....an extra cover for Siddle!!! Like he's going to suddenly start carving drives through the covers.

If it wasn't for session winning performances from Bell, Broad and Anderson, and a bit of rain, we'd be losing this series. Our batting seems to lack a real purpose. I know Root is young, but without someone with Cook who can tick the scoreboard over, every innings seems to start at a pedestrian pace so that we end up scoring 2 per over, and taking a load of time out of the game end up at 70-3 with half the day gone.

Trott is now coming in early at no.3 generally in this series facing the newish ball, and yet he is batting like the ball is 50 overs old and he's been in all day. By the time KP comes we're in trouble with no momentum in the innings at all. This has been repeated and repeated hence we've not managed a big score so far. We surely need to go after someone like Starc a bit like we did Johnson in previous series.

I've enjoyed the results, you can't argue with that. But I honestly believe man for man it's unacceptable at this level to have more than half your team out of form. There is something going on where some of the team are not happy with the tactics, or the coaching, but it's a serious problem to suddenly have 4 or 5 of your reliable batsman completely out of form.

Hopefully we can approach this positively today, because there is no reason you can't get 600 on this pitch like the South Africans did last year. Starc bowled some absolute toilet last night, and he needs to be punished today. Every shot, whether a leave, a defensive block to a drive should be played with a positive mindset, if you think you're going to score you'll move your feet more, get into better positions. Cook looks like his first thought is defence and his footwork last night is still a massive worry for his form.

Come on England, turn this test around, there is a lot of time left!!

So glad it was not just me seeing these things! we'll see how they apply themselves today, but I fear that it will be an attempt at crease occupation that will be in vain.

Your point that you can be defensive but remain in a postive mind set whilst doing it is spot on!

Very much this. There is a good article by Simon Barnes in The Times today essentialy saying that we have been playing the Aussies in to form as the series has progressed. And, although they have lost this series 3-0 they will feel more confident this winter than us. Dire times ahead I fear, especially as, apart from Root, there are no new players coming through. Anderson and Swann can't go on much longer.

ps, we are flaying the Aussie attack for 2 an over, Sigh.
