My first date with my now wife, this was during the Clinton administration and the question of whether Hillary could become president came up. She said she thought America would elect a black man before they elected a woman. I thought she might be mad at the time. But almost thirty years later, I guess she was right.
I mean, yes she was obviously right, but Hilary Clinton had a shocking campaign in truth. I don’t think it was the fact she was a woman personally, I think it was the fact she was dreadful

Sadly.

KH is useless apparently. No idea why.
i've not really got a good answer this, it seems she's just not gone down well in political circles including Democrats. not that she's terrible, more very "meh", not stood out in her office, not made any positive impressions.

Good, I suspect Harris up against senile Trump will change the narrative somewhat
Im not sure Harris is up to it?

All the polling presently says the only candidate who would trounce Trump is Michelle Obama. She may not want it, but I hope she does it for one term only, the % gap in polling is considerable if she were to run, hopefully it would enable the Dems to take both houses, then they could ensure the corrupt supreme court doing Trumps bidding is re-balanced fairly, and enable the legal due processes against the Orange seditionist Lunatic to play out, without the corrupt supreme court trying to assist him.

If its a fair independent legal process, without interference, I'd guess Trump will end in jail, the US will retain its democracy and the rest of the world can take a deep sigh of relief.

the stakes are too high to gamble on Harris

You've made the same point twice now with no takers, going for the hat-trick?

Not sure what you count as a "taker" but his legacy will be one of supporting and facilitating apartheid and horrendous war crimes. It needs to be pointed out even if inconvenient to you.

It looks to me that KH is the only game in town, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s been underestimated.

America does seem to hate a powerful woman, half of the woke nonsense that the right are so obsessed by is rednecks upset because they can’t beat their wives any more.

Sadly I believe America is absolutely stupid enough to vote Trump in again, and wallow in four more years of horseshit wondering why things are only getting better for people with the surname “Trump”

I still make Trump the favourite, but I will be interested to see how any future debates pan out. There will be a stark optical contrast between a geriatric Trump and KH, and now it won’t be in Trump’s favour.

I dont disagree with much of that, but its Biden and the party that have hidden her away, no one knows if she is any good, other than a few bits here and there, in which she does not look great

We’re about to find out. TBF most vice-presidents have been largely anonymous, with the possible exception of Dan Quayle and his inability to spell potato. Which was probably the inciting incident for all future VPs being hidden away.

Struggling to come to terms with the implications here. Not sure KH has the overall appeal to beat Trump at the moment but.... she could galvanise the female voters and, possibly galvanise the BAME vote plus mop up general Dems votes.

Joe Biden might have one last great duty to perform for the USA. At Trump's inauguration he can pull out a gun and shoot Trump dead...and then claim the Presidential immunity from prosecution that Trump was awarded in court.

Simples.

A very good decision by Biden - said weeks and weeks ago, he should pull out. (In fact said way back in 2022, that he shouldn’t run again). Just rather annoyed that he left it so late to step aside. I agree at the moment, KH is the most available candidate and Biden has endorsed her as such - but the truth is, the Dems never would have agreed to her being on top of the ticket at the start of this campaign.

There are several potential Senators including Mark Kelly, who could claim the swing vote needed to beat Trump. However there are also many pissed off Biden supporters who feel that Biden was ‘edged out’ by ranking members- they will be even more pissed off if the leaders of the Dems then pass over Harris - the first Black women candidate in American history.

I don’t think KH is the best candidate on a number of levels, as @peterward says, Michele Obama would be a stronger Black woman candidate - I’m not sure America is ready for either of them though - but realistically she might be all they have.

Time is against whoever steps up as an alternative to a Harris candidacy and that’s a problem.

Imo there’s no viable Democratic possibility.

No one of any real seriousness would want to step up against Trump at this stage - a week after an assassination attempt, a massively galvanized Republican Party and voters, weeks after the collapse of Biden and to some extent, the Democratic Party since the debate.

Awful polls for Harris over the past 3.5 years. The best chance the Dems had realistically was RFK Jr, but he’s long out, unless they entice him back in.

So it’s an almost guaranteed forfeit by putting Harris out there.
Plead for RFK to join the ranks.
A Hail-Mary play to get Michelle Obama in the game.

The Democrats could hold an open Convention (ie whereby it’s left until the Convention to decide) but either way, time is against whoever steps up as an alternative to a Harris candidacy and that’s a problem.
At some point, Democrat voters will need to decide whether it's more important to have their own personal choice lead the party ....or to get behind whoever their party selects, and beat Trump.
