Last season was the first time since 1997/98 that all 3 promoted clubs went straight back down to the Championship.
There is obviously a gap, but it CAN be bridged by well-run clubs and wise recruitment.
While that is true, I think we've been heading towards the consolidation phase for quite a while now.

As with any new phenomenon, Premier League has had its fair share of chaos. Looking at league tables from the 90s is like looking at at the old days of cinema or the 1960s music scene: plenty of "labels" competing, exploring, challenging, pushing. But after a while, those involved learn how to control and exploit markets while making life difficult or impossible for rivals.

Thats imo where its headed.. the consolidation phase. 15-16-17-18 big ones that can sign The Beatles for every position against one or two independent upcomers recording bowel movements on cassette.

Needs to be artificially resolved if its not going to be essentially a closed league like the MLS.

I would quite like Sunderland to go up as the Stadium of Light is another ground to tick off. Ditto Leeds and Middlesbrough. But, please, don’t use the term ‘proper club’ - traditional or historic, yes. It infers that clubs that have not had a successful past or won lots of trophies are not ‘proper’ like us, or Bournemouth and Brentford. Despite that we are in the flight on merit - now that does make it proper.

Okay, mini-rant over!

The MLS is a closed shop because there is no promotion or relegation, so there's simply no comparison to be made with that.

I'm not sure what you mean by "artificially resolving" it, or how you would suggest going about it. Or even what you are looking to resolve tbh. Since football was invented in 1992, 51 different clubs have played in the Premier League, so thats a pretty decent churn. You'll always get a few yo-yo's like Sheff Utd, Burnley, Leicester.

But there's still plenty of fresh meat coming up and often making a decent fist of it. Luton was a total random albeit they couldn't survive, Ipswich have made a return after 20-odd years and look like they might have the chops to stay up. Snap judgements should not be made based on the current promoted teams, of which only Southampton look completely doomed already.

It's obviously never going to be easy for promoted clubs to compete and stay up, particularly with PSR stifling investment. But numerous clubs have proved that it CAN be done. I don't see that changing any time soon.

Rovers yes, City fans however, are the most insufferably entitled lot....on a par with Massive and Plucky.

Ah, fair enough. I haven't had much interaction with Bristol City fans, other than the playoff final.
I spent a year living right next to The Mem and went to a couple of Rovers games. They always seemed like a good bunch.
