Simon Barnes has a letter in todays local paper;

There are some things that need to be said about your article on Roz South.
Many football clubs have a minority of mindless thugs and Brighton and Hove Albion are no exception.
Let me qoute from an article in November last year: "Ten soccer thugs brought terror to a city centre as they clashed with rival fans, a court heard. Chairs and tables were hurled through a pub window as Brighton fans battled Leeds supporters. Witnesses and staff cowered in fear as missiles were hurled into the Pump House in Market Street, Brighton. The violence erupted four hours after the Albion beat Leeds at Withdean in October, last year".
Marcus Fletcher, prosecuting, said: "This was football hooliganism at it's worst. Members of the public enjoying a Saturday night, were forced to take refuge at the rear of the pub. All of those who witnessed the level of violence involved were left shocked and terrified".
It is in this context that one needs to judge her poster. It is not just a harmless piece of lampooning of a politician. There is a hidden threat here. Ms South should think about the consequences of what she does. The campaign against Falmer Village and LDC has been particularly nasty, and intimidating, involving phone-calls and threatening abusive emails.
The aim appears to be to silence any opposition to the stadium at Falmer. This cannot be right!

--------------------------------------------------------
So does Simon blame Roz for the riot then?

I guess he is proposing that Roz's actions could create, and be seen to condone violence.

He would claim it might incite, rather than labelling Roz herself a thug. But it's pretty close, the implication is not very veiled.

It is also the most pathetic pandering to old stereotypes. Anyone who is seriously claiming the campaign for Falmer has been characterised by violence is clinically insane.

Strange I thought we had been praised for the good natured way in which we have conducted ourselves so far.
Still if he wants to see nasty, then I'm sure it could be arranged.

If I remember correctly only one of them had previously watched a match at Withdean, the other 9 had no record of them watching the Albion at the Goldstone, Priestfield and Withdean or any away games. They only became soccer thugs because of fighting Leeds fans - a tenuous link. If they started a pub fight with local drinkers it would have been reported as ordinary Saturday night violence.

Write that to them

I would just double check those facts, if you are going to write in, as I am pretty sure a few of them had a history of watching us, at least one had just come back from a banning order.

Isn't that just the sort of thing he is on about? There are plenty of threads on here that would provide Mr Barnes with more than enough "evidence" to claim abuse and intimidation of Falmer village and LDC. Not agreeing with him, just saying its not hard to see where he is coming from and why he adopted the arguments he did in that letter.

Dear Sir or Madam,

In response to Simon Barnes’ letter, I would be grateful to know what particular acts (plural) that the club/fans have carried out, can be classed as intimidating? To suggest that Roz South ‘could’ be responsible for inciting or condoning violence is far fetched.

I am lead to believe by the Sussex Police, that the “fans” involved in the fracas, after the Leeds game, had not attended the football, bar one exception.

Should destructive letters, such as Mr Barnes’ be printed? Should the whole of Sussex suffer the loss of a stadium, due to a small minority sending foul and abusive emails/phone calls?

I have noticed that Simon Barnes, appears to be a serial letter writer, bandying about accusations against the fans and supporters of the stadium, even club officials. Is this an underhand attempt to undermime the clubs position and 'sway' the public feeling?

Kind regards,

?a?l ?r?o? ;)

Forgot about the old days when it was pay on the gate home or away so they could have gone without appearing on a database.
