Sussex By the sea

Don't Mention The War
All these over the top comments like totally rape. Ok ok I now concede then, other suggestions by me about the subject were ignored. Debate and abuse are 2 different things. If everything was commanded by history then we would all be getting nowhere in life. Far too harsh and far too much rhetoric. It's a song not a life and death, if you lot all wanted your history, I don't see many people wearing shirts with the original club badge.

I've been a Albion fan all my life, with my mum and dad who have been supporting this great club nearly all their lifes aswell. We're all die hards in my family. We go everywhere home and away. Been a Season Ticket Holder with my family aswell for absolutely years. I always love putting on my Albion shirt, new or old it gives me great pride to wear it. So don't call me arrogant, I would die for this club if I had the chance!

I seem to remember the version of GOSBTS played at the Millenium Stadium before and after the playoff final was pretty spine tingling. So shows what a great tune it will be on decent PA.

The version on my phone is by the Horsham Borough Band Sussex By The Sea

That's the version I've downloaded as well. Think it was this one that was played at the Mill Stad too.

You were called arrogant because you made a sweeping statement about me that was not true, i was not questioning your loyality as Brighton fan. You can all pick a fight amongst yourselves now then, it was a personal attack when all it really needed to be was a debate about a piece of music. I get quoted some drivel about world war 1 and the history and how i would, and i quote "totally rape" the music just a rdiduclous over the top comment and if a few of you had actually bothered to read all of the thread then you would of seen that i change my tact o the subject and thought maybe just re-recording it(but in exactly the same format) may of been a better idea so it is a really crisp sound for a new PA system. I find it amazing that a few people on here are intent on abusing people because you just would not act like that in the real world, and in fact it is how the world works....people have different opinions. No everyone though decides to respond in such a childish abusive manner by throwing such personal attacks. If your all so up on the history thing, why are you all wearing blue and white striped shirts, or was the club "raping" the clubs tradition when they changed it to stripes back in 1904. I also got Quoted the you'll never walk alone song, football fans stole that song from the carousel film so that has nothing at all to do with football club tradition either. i posted something for feedback on people's opinions on it not to be abused, if some of you are not capable of that without being offensive then shame on you.

Oh, and Working Class pride, it seems that is YOU that has been "raping the song" by your reckoning, as i do not remember the words 'We are going to up to win the cup"' being in the original version. You want your own version of history then have it.

I have a horrible feeling you might work fo the club, but I bloody hope not. You dont get it do you? The Albion run out to the tune of GOSBTS and tthe Albion fans adapted the words. This a direct link to the Sussex football club adopting the county song of Sussex and the song that some of our families went to war with. If you want to change songs that clubs run out to stay clear of the Albion, and try the bloody scousers. Would you change "let em come" at Millwall, "Red Red Robin" at Charlton? You have no clue, no heritage and no soul - do you support palace?

I think this comes under the category of "if it ain't broke". Remember when Paul McCartney did a new version of the Crossroads theme ? Disaster.

However - if a Sussex marching band made a new version based on the original - that would be worth a go.

If I may quote selectively from E.Hobsbawm from the introduction to his book 'The Invention of Tradition':

"The term 'invented traditions' is used in a broad, but not imprecise sense. It includes both 'traditions' actually invented, constructed and formally instituted and those emerging in a less easily traceable manner within a brief and dateable period - a matter of a few years perhaps and establishing themselves with great rapidity. The Royal Christmas broadcast in Britain is an example of the first and development of practices assocaited with the Cup Final in British Association Football, of the second."

"'Invented tradition' is taken to mean a set of practices, normally governed or overtly or tacitly accepted rules and of a ritual or symbolic nature, which seek to inculcate certain values and norms of behaviour by repetition, which automatically implies continuity with the past."

"It is also clear that entirely new symbols and devices came into existence as part of national movements and states, such as the national anthem (of which the British in 1740 seems to be the earliest), the national flag (still largely a variation on the French revolutionary tricolour, evolved 1790-4) or the personification of 'the nation' in symbol or image such as John Bull."

To paraphrase, 'invented tradition' adapts over time and I think it is fair to say that GOSBTS is inculcated on the vast majority of Albion fans. People slavishly think of the national anthem or Union Jack as the height of tradition but in the history of England or Great Britain, they have been around for a fraction of the time. So just because we have only had Norman Wisdom's words for 40 years, deosn't stop them being considered traditional. And it doesn't mean that other traditions have to be adhered to such as original badge. Just because a tradition is invented, it is no less of a tradition.

For what it's worth, my preference would be for the traditional version to be "enhanced" by the lyrics sung by a regimental choir (didn't someone mention yonks ago that the Sussex Regimant veterans gave a rousing rendition which showed how it should be done?).

Keeping it traditional whilst we move into our new home will help to cement the links between the present / future and our heritage.

For the 1st League fixture, a marching band and choir to sing GOSBTS would be fantastic. Even better would be for someone to record it, as I'm sure those fans present will contribute massively to the chorus at the very least.

Still, only my humble opinion.

Is the Horsham Borough Band still in existence.
Absolutely, BG and here's their website too. Horsham Borough Band Home
Their version is lovely, with expert musicianship too, jaunty, breezy, an absolute pleasure.

But those of us wanting something for Falmer, that will work on a powerful, high quality stadium PA, delivering an emotional, crowd-stirring atmosphere will prefer the dramatic sound of a full-on, military-style band.

I only wish there were a way of demonstrating the difference between versions that NSC members could hear for themselves. Then those arguing that SBTS is simply right as it is would realise there are many more interpretations out there to be enjoyed. After that, it's unlikely that too many supporters would be content just having the 20 year old Withdean recording being played a lot louder. It's all so much more subtle than that.

But it's great that there's so much passion around GOSBTS, from all sides. Look at it this way: we are privileged, because here's a unique chance to make history: to come up with a treatment of Sussex by the Sea that will amaze and inspire all of us at Falmer, and into the future.
