This really isn't newsworthy, is it? Let's face it, we've only heard of this because it involves a British woman. No-one on here would be giving it a second thought or starting a thread on it if the woman in question was Sudanese.

I think, if you read anything other than the Metro, you might see that there are reports about dispicable acts committed by Muslims on Muslims on a fairly regular basis. The above posting re: stoning a rape victim, for example. And the newsreader in Saudi who was almost beaten to death by her husband. Or female circumcision. Or honour killings. Islam is an absolute disgrace and this story is most definitely newsworthy as it shows how primitive and unacceptable sharia law is, which I believe is an important message to spread.

I think it's an oversight, and it's not right in my eyes, however we do need to look to the law of their land, whether we believe it or not. If we say a person didnt understand that stealing was wrong, yet stole something, shouldn't we prosecute them?

But that's the thing. A packet of polos stolen can (and has) had people arrested and cautioned. It's absurd in your eyes, but is a serious offence in others. That's the way it is.

I'm planning to do aid work in the future in the likes of Sudan once I have qualified as a nurse, and I will do my homework of the laws and cultures that I will come across before I get there. It doesnt mean that I will agree with them, however you have got to accept them and abide by them.

I read The Times. Yes, it does carry examples of the the above, but they tend to be tucked away on page 35 in the world news pages. They certainly don't make front page news as this has done.

I dont think nicking polos is a serious offence - do you really think i'm that stupid? Come on! If you read what i say, then you will understand that people are over zealous in all countries, even ours.

As a compassionate human being surely you should shout from the rooftops against these rules and not just accept them as its " their law ". If I were to follow a religion it would be one that teached compassion and tolerance and respect for all human being and religious, sexual or what ever beliefs and not one that is so out of touch with reality that it thinks that calling a teddy bear a name or someone stealing some polo's is a serious offence worthy of a public flogging.

Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons said she made an "innocent mistake"
A British teacher has been charged in Sudan with insulting religion, inciting hatred and showing contempt for religious beliefs.
The Foreign Office has confirmed that charges have been laid against Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool.

She was arrested in Khartoum after allowing her class of primary school pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband has said he will summon the Sudanese ambassador "as a matter of urgency".

In a statement, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he was "surprised and disappointed" at the charges.

A spokesman said the first step was to "understand the rationale behind the charge", something which would be discussed by Mr Miliband and the ambassador as soon as possible.

"We will consider our response in the light of that," he added.

Lawyers say Mrs Gibbons faces six months in jail, 40 lashes or a fine if convicted.

'Sensitive issue'

Sudanese state media said prosecutors had completed their investigation and decided to charge Mrs Gibbons under Article 125 of the Sudanese criminal code.

The BBC's Amber Henshaw, in Khartoum, said Mrs Gibbons was expected to appear in court on Thursday.

Mrs Gibbons taught at the fee-paying Unity High School in Khartoum and the school's director, Robert Boulos, said earlier: "This is a very sensitive issue. We are very worried about her safety.

Earlier, the Sudanese Embassy in London said the situation was a "storm in a teacup" and indicated that the teacher could be released soon, saying the incident was based on a cultural misunderstanding.

In September, Mrs Gibbons asked her pupils to vote on a name for a teddy bear as part of a study of animals and their habitats.

One boy told reporters: "The teacher asked me what I wanted to call the teddy. I said Muhammad. I named it after my name."

The BBC's security correspondent Frank Gardner said the situation could potentially become a very serious diplomatic incident.

Sudan has been tucked away on Page 35 of the Times for years. Osama Bin Laden was based in Sudan until around 98 where the Americans effectively forced him to Afghanistan. There have been wars between the muslim government & Christian south largely to do with the government taking up a radical stance as well as numerous stories of the country being absolutely potless.

In terms of places to visit its up there with Beiriut, Kabul, Baghdad & Croydon. I'm amazed its taken this long for it to hit big news - over a teddy of all things.

It is not a miscarriage of justice as she has not been convicted of anything yet, merely charged. However, not being an expert of Sudanese law, as I assume you yourself are not, I don't think I'm in a position to comment on whether it would constitute a miscarriage of justice were she to be convicted despite considering the punishment distasteful.

But frankly I would find Eskimos more interesting than the fate of this Liverpudlian munter.
