God some people talk utter crap! You're not in a position to comment? Can you not think independently for yourself??

Distasteful? Do you know what 40 lashes does to someones flesh?

quite right - given many muslim's reaction to the Danish cartoon incident a couple of years ago, shouldn't we be burning their embassy down in London tonight? We don't because we had our medieval age 600+ years ago......

Are you serious...????????????

She hasnt broken the law, she called a teddy bear Mohammed ffs. Muslim Law is always down to interpretation.

Someone somewhere within their two bob dark age country has seen a woman, a white one at that and wants to torture her..........

You may think that its their law and let them torture an English woman, but you are a disgrace.

I bet you were up in arms with the fone competitions on the Richard & Judy Show etc and wanted someone brought to justice for that....but as for this poor woman.....you'll let this role eh...../:tosser:

Blah blah blah blah blah. She broke sudanese law - whether its an interpretation or not!

Of course i didnt make a fuss about the phone ins - if people are thick enough to apply for those things then they should lose money.

I am serious. I dont think it's right for her to get lashings, she could still get away with a fine. But she did break the law.

Of course I dont believe that people who get raped should get lashings - that's stupid.

I dont care what you think i am! You can swear at me all you like!

Laura, I think you are wrong on this one. There are Laws and Laws. If you were a Jew in Europe in the 30/40s then the law said you would be gassed to death. That was not acceptable. The way that some Muslims use the "law" to subjugate women is a disgrace as is the interpretation of the Koran to justify barbaric treatment of citizens.

If I had my way I would stop all aid to countries that have torture and I would stop lovely people like you from going and helping them.

But such countries are always voicing their opinion on our laws and values, why shouldn't we?

The foreign office should just tell all British Nationals to leave the Sudan given their laws are completely bonkers and you can't be sure of a fair trial. It's like the stoning sketch from the life of brian - only it's hardly funny this time. How the leap from naming a teddy bear to western plot can be made underlines how irrationale and paranoid muslim fantatics have become. There's just no reasoning with them.

Read this from the BBC website!!
Sudan's top clerics have called for the full measure of the law to be used against Mrs Gibbons and labelled her actions part of a Western plot against Islam.

World War 3 will happen in our lifetime - I'm sure of it. Sweepstake anyone?! I reckon it'll start in 2015 - which means we're running out of time to win the premiership!!

If these animals think that we should have to abide by their laws in their country and its ok to whip a British woman lets withdraw all aid and aid workers in their toilet of a country ,and declare that any physical attack on this woman will be treated as an act of war,and show them stinking bastards we are not to be f***ed with, instead of running scared ,and whilst were at it any resident in this country who agrees with sudan should f*** off over there NOW. ,Rant over

Not the sharpest knife in the drawer are you? In Saudi Arabia they stone women to death who have sex outside of wedlock. They tie them up, place them in a large sack and then put them in a hole in the ground. Over two dozen men then pelt her with stones until she dies. This can take quite a while as well! There is a catch though...if she crawls out of the hole and crosses a white line on the sand, she is released (only they never do...cos they're tied up you see!)

And this is fine by you cos its the LAW

Read your stupid comments then you might understand why many on here will rightly think your a fool.

It doesnt matter what the Country the punishment needs to be proportionate ... and time after time the Muslim World are torturing and killing people and the West must stand up to this barbarism....... but when are own people ( like you )passively endorse this punishment it is only allowing this disgusting behaviour to continue.

Where have they questioned our laws / values? It's questionable that the sudanese gvt care about anything outside their borders.

I agree that it is excessive. In a country like Sudan you wont get a fair trial.... if you're sudanese. There's a lot of pressure from the outside world about recinding the charge, and i'd imagine she will probably get let off at the end of the day anyway. If you look to the law she is guilty for it. That's not a problem with her - it's a problem of the law in question, which does need to change, but at this very moment, it remains a law.

The clerics in sudan will always say that - just look at the darfur region for how tyrannous they are. At the moment, it's very fashionable for the "Christians" to be against the "muslims" and they were bound to jump on the Western vs rest of the world bandwagon. It's no surprise.

I dont think there will be a WW3 - there's too much at stake now. It's Mutual Assured Destruction.

I think you've hit the nail on the head here, just because it's the law doesn't make it right. It doesn't matter whether it's a Muslim country or a Christian country, this punishment is morally wrong.

I have sympathy for the teacher she probably did not realise just how mental these people are.

Why though anyone would want to go and work in these god forsaken places is beyond me.

Why would any sane person elect to live in a country that behaves like that.
Muslims are for the most part nutters of the highest order.

We renamed our class Giraffe "Mohammed" as part of a sympathy vote today. However, as we are a Catholic school, I can't see Opus Dei kicking the doors down to start laying down the lashes. Actually, even if we named the fluffy otter "God", I can't see the law being applied for inciting racial hatred either.

I am going to see if naming the Panda "Pope Benedict" has a knock on effect.

I think you're out of order! Completely!

BAG has very eloquently stated her case, and as far as I see it she hasn't ever agreed with the punishment that is given out. Simply stated, as is the truth, that the teacher in that country is bound by the laws of that country.

We can all debate til the cows come home how much we hate their laws and what an abuse of human nature they are, but that is what they are. Their laws. She named an innanimate object after the prophet Mohammed. That is illegal. She is now facing the stated punishment. The same way drug trafficing in Thailand is dealt with.

Debate the fact that the law is ridiculous or the punishment is archaic and dispicable, but it exists and thats all BAG is saying. You travel to another country with knowledge, you run the risk of falling foul.
