The store's backed down so everyone just chill. And Don Q, if you check the Rotheman's book of wars, 2009 edition, you'll see Britain did win WW1 & WW2. Be proud of your ancestors, especially those still alive. You may not have existed if they hadn't have fought against tyranny.

The war happened a long time ago now. There is hardly anyone alive who even fought in it anymore. Some people need to get over the two world wars as though it is some sort of trophy. The "we won the war" stuff is just a scam the history books tell you. No one won the war. We all lost.

To you that may seem even handed but to most its a judgement of soloman.

You dont ban your own flags in your own country, are we a special case? Yes its OUR country. Are we priveleged? Yes its our country. Is this fair to foreigners who would want to wave their flags? Well yes because they can go back to their own country to wave theirs and we if visiting would have to respect their laws.

By the same token, if you are visiting the Emirates Stadium, you need to respect the club's rules. To those Blackburn fans, I say, if you don't like the rules of any club, don't enter their stadium.

Those Blackburn fans think they're such a special case! They're not.

Absolutely outrageous. This country makes me sick sometimes. Time to go back to old fashioned English values I think.

Or an old fashioned media that doesn't over promote little stories as if there is a national crises ?

There is just about as much national concern about our armed forces welfare as there as ever been, so I wouldn't get sucked in by this non story.

I don't wear a poppy because quite frankly I'd lose it in about ten minutes, but I did drop a fiver in the blokes tin at Stockwell tube station.

Silly old leftie me.

You really should try engaging that dormant organ between your ears when you talk to the grown ups.

They're private companies. They're allowed to make whatever policy they like for their staff dress code. I don't know why people get so worked up about it.

If you don't like it, don't shop there. Hardly the fault of the government or the country like some people seem to be carrying on about.

What a disgrace. If you don't like the poppy, then piss off.

I used to know an old guy in Peacehaven, who actually thought on the beaches, the stories he told me where fascinating. I have not seen him walking in town for the last couple of months. I do hope he is still ok, because he is a bloody hero and people should show more respect to past and present.

And as for the piece of scum that urinated on the memorial, and all this polictical correctness, foff and get a life.

I read today that that kid who urinated on the memorial could be facing prison. He was also apparantley out on one of those Carnage nights the Argus have been covering in depth over the past two weeks. Not looking good for the little fool.

Exactly, why does everything have to come down to being a racist. Absolutely pathetic. None of us are racist.

Your argument hinges on the assumption that we are nothing special, I would say we are in our own country.

We don't ban flags in our own country though. They are banned in the Emirates in order to appease advertisers, who do not want their corporate marketing spend underneath flags. Every match I go to we take a flag of St George, and if there is sufficient room and it does not block anyone's views, we are allowed to put it up.

You are trying to make political capital out of a commercial decision.

That cannot be a serious post. I don't believe anyone is that stupid or disrespectful.

Clapham Gull is right though, these things tend to be non stories. If a store has policy of no one wearing anything on their uniforms then surely it has to be applied across the board, it doesn't mean they are singling out the poppy for 'politically correct' (whatever that means these days) reasons. If they then ask a member of staff to stop wearing one then suddenly it becomes a news story about how we are not allowed to wear poppies any more, this sums up the state of our once great country today etc yet that just isn't the case. Everyone is wearing their poppies with no problem except in certain forms of work for health and safety reasons (Firemen, machine workers etc)

The newspaper industry is going the biggest crisis it has ever had and will do anything it can to sell newspapers. Unfortunately the creation of these non stories will just get more frequent.

"We can't wear the poppy", "We can't fly the flag"

Let's have a look those statements carefully.

It's an isolated incident. The store in question has a policy where staff aren't allowed to wear anything that could be deemed as "a political statement".

They are wrong, they have admitted they are wrong and will now allow staff to wear them.

I struggle to think of another example ever where poppies were banned, except Strictly Come Dancing which had something to do with the costumes.

I also struggle to find examples of where the St. Georges cross is banned from being flown.

I see it all the time in London and during a football tournament there are thousands of the things.

So remind me again, where exactly are St. Georges flags and poppies banned ?

this is nsc. that kind of measured reason is not welcome here.

Its not solely about the money, its about SHOWING you care by wearing a poppy, and bet a pound to a penny that "silly old lefty you" doesn't wear a poppy for reasons other than that you'd "lose it in ten minutes".

Quite.

When we were in India, we were told to to take our flags down as they were covering the 'Airtel' logo and quite rightly they weren't happy, so we took them down.

Perhaps I should write a freelance article with the incendary title, "India bans reminders of it's colonial past" and sell it to the Daily Mail et al.

Of course I'll neglect to mention that they were happy to have them on unused seats....
