Er.....yes, equally I know many people (including myself) who's lives have been made the better by rejecting this medieval rubbish, ditto there are plenty of nasty people who also reject the church. Its the blatent denial that annoys me the most, as Catholics though they will probably forgive themselves anyway.

Its almost like you can ONLY become a nicer person in the churches eyes by joining their throng, that I find offensive and bluntly just a bit 'weird' I'm afraid

You've contradicted yourself there by saying it is necessary to tar the whole concept of the church, but then admitting that the same could be said for non-religious people.

I think you'll find that the denials and cover-ups from the church (not to mention the incidents themselves) have upset practicing Catholics more than anyone, but it doesn't justify the out and out degradation of the entire movement and belief. Unfortunately I can't help but believe that it is being used by some as an excuse to air prejudices.

For example, I have just spent a week of my annual holiday and the best part of £1000 of my own earnings helping with this charity: HCPT - The Pilgrimage Trust, taking disabled and disadvantaged children on a holiday to Lourdes. The young people have an amazing time and opportunities that they wouldn't necessarily otherwise get, and its organised by members of the Catholic Church, reflecting their ideals. Why should what has gone on mean people can just degrade and insult all the great things that people involved in the Catholic church do?

I am more disgusted that anyone with the evil things that members of the Catholic Church have done, but that doesn't make it acceptable (or logical) to use it to bash a faith as a whole. I can't help but feel that if this thread was about another religion, the mods would have shut it down by now.

Anyways, not my place to argue with the intellectual high-ground that is atheism, so I shall leave you be.

I grew up as a Catholic and all it done for me was turn me in to an Athiest. Forced to go to church every f*cking Sunday and I dreaded every f*cking Sunday.
I used to ask priests questions and most of the time they hadn't a clue how to answer. Like the time I asked how could Mary have a child if she hadn't had Sex. The priest would normally tell this spotty little 8 year old to wash his mouth out and then he'd have a word with my Mum. That's when I realised that it was all a load of cobblers.
Bitter towards any kind of religion? You bet I f*cking am.

Loved watching Mr Fry's speech as he summed it up perfectly. The man is a genius. Now going to watch the whole debate.

You must really hate the Labour Party then or politics in general.

Incredibly bitter towards them too?

What the f*** has that got to do with it? Hopefully you're fishing.

Politics is democracy. I can choose to vote for whom I like. As a young Catholic, I had no choice. Thankfully the day came when I could turn my back on a institution that was corrupt, contradictory and sometimes brutal.

All you need to do in life is be a good person and enjoy yourself.

Not fishing at all.

Your present government lied about iraq and then tried to cover it up(as did a few nations).

How many people died by Labors actions and that subsequent cover up?

I think we can agree, people being killed is every bit as bad as sexual abuse.

Will you turn your back on your government that's corrupt, contradictory and sometimes brutal?

Just askin like.

does the church or religion have a monopoly on charity work? do all church goers or believers go about charity work? no. so its irrelevent to the debate, nice for you to help but it has very little to do with a church other than they happen to organise it. you speak of "intellectual high ground of athism" after providing the "better that thou" high ground so often used by faith groups.

I now how you feel. I despise the Catholic Church. As for ordinary Catholics I feel sorry for them. How can any sane person swallow the crap that their church preaches ?

As Fry pointed out, yes the catholic church may have a billion followers but they are predominantly uneducated and very poor.

Fair, non-bias education will go a long way to stopping the exploitation of the poor and uneducated by the catholic church.

I feel sorry for you.

Imagine wasting your time/thoughts being so bitter over something that's got nothing to do with you anymore.

Move on chap.

Its a wonderful world out there and it would be quite dull if we were all the same.
