Think Naylor is just quite conservative so waits until a deal is pretty much done before reporting it as opposed to others who have a slightly more scattergun approach. It does mean that he very rarely gets things wrong but is perhaps a bit dull for the social media generation

Probably is a difference in generations, he made his name reporting daily where you can take your time to make more accurate content vs the social media approach of just firing out stuff constantly and hoping some of it "lands". I don't remember transfer rumours being as big a deal before Twitter but now it seems to make up the bulk of football content
Agreed. He works successfully for a global digital media outlet that only started a few years ago so not sure how conservative he is but i value his writing and reporting and pay for it . Yes., he does actual reporting which is why he's mentioned on here loads of times during transfer window ("I didn't believe this rumour but Naylor's confirmed it so ...") . So clearly many fans trust what he says . Thats's rare these days.

He's not on here afaik so if people want to have a go at him often without bothering to check - and there's several that get their kicks by doing that for some reason, - then suggest they use X or email the Athletic.

I'll never get the Naylor thing. Especially when, according to some posters, one minute he's so close to the club that they are telling him to do a post about Minteh getting dropped for being late to a meeting - and the next minute he's not even on their radar and he's a forgotten has-been.

Choose a facking lane, people :lolol:

Agreed. And the article about our form was fair and quite punchy in places about Fab , not sure Paul Barber is telling him to write that

I have disliked him for more than 25 years.
He has been happy to shit stir.
His influence has been neutral at best, and often negative.
Metaphorically speaking I'd be happy to shoot this particular messenger.

Whether you think he's close to the club or not, the one thing he will do is check a story. Like Brian Owen and Alex Crook, he knows how to use a phone. Some don't for fear that their 'story' will be knocked down.

I'm sure he IS quite close to the club – I like the guy. You don't get to do the length of time he has been in that job (or any job) without getting on with people or – at worst – having some sort of begrudging mutual respect for each other.

And yes, as a fellow journo (to you and the real AN), I've found there's nothing more important to the subject of your story being fact-checked. I've seen the fallout when people haven't done it and it has been – quite literally – career-defining!

Sussex but not by the sea
This guy reminds me of Darwin Nunez but from a small sample looks like he could be a more composed finisher.
In which case I understand why we are paying the fee that we are paying, which feels rather steep otherwise. Essentially if we want these prospects we need to find them before they go to somewhere like Lisbon.
Being in such a strong league means we have the cash but don't have a level playing field in terms football opportunity as other teams outside the EPL, in weaker domestic leagues most of the time, the Sporting Lisbons, RB Salzburgs, etc of Europe are the big fish in their 2-3 horse leagues but have the advantage of UCL or UEL football.

That's fine – you think what you like HWT. Although I'm interested in where you think he's shit stirred (and if it's an objective or if there's a subjective/Albion-tinted bias).

My issue is with people's professional opinion of him. As I just wrote, you don't get to stay in one industry for that long without doing something right. I don't know the guy at all but, from a work point of view, I think he goes about his business in a good way. A journalist's influence is, some would argue, designed to be neutral. They should never become the subject of the story.

It seems to be a relationship that works for both parties

Interesting signing, I don’t know much about him but do know the Reds were scouting him for a while as he would have been a typical FSG signing.
Will have to spend more time watching German football to see how he will fit in.

When you’ve previously signed the best young Irish striker ever, the best young Paraguan ever and the next Messi, and all three are out on loan with at least one wanting long term out, think it’s sensible to not be too excited about supposed wonder kids joining.

Not sure why it’s quite so gloomy here. German league 2 is decent quality. If Evan can get back to his pre injury player we would have 2 excellent prospects. An article written about liverpools interests but seems he has pace skill and loves a shot and his movement is excellent. He appears to have bulked up a bit as well from when he started out in the Greek league last season and has a physical presence.

Either way this is a typical BHA signing. The limited data on him suggests he could be brilliant. We sign now for the price and gamble before more and more data and scout reports from the big clubs comes in or we likely miss out all together.
Data isn’t always right but it is the model we follow.
