A clear out of any dead wood, yes. Actual reduction in squad size, no. We need to bring in better players to replace those shipped out.
Well you can't "clear out" dead wood if they are contracted and Albion - unlike some clubs - have no first teamers (assuming Veltman signs) who have been allowed to run down their contract.. (Ask Leicester !!) . They will just go on loan again .

No. And he can't sign because the window is not open for a couple of weeks anyway but reporting is very solid indeed for both Dahoud and Milner. So its just a matter of time.
He can still sign a contract. We just can't register him as ours until the window opens.

Huge squad isn't it? Some disappointed kids over the summer you'd think, and some seriously tough decisions about one or two senior players to get the space for more and better players. Exciting summer coming up.

I know this is a common phrase, so not having a go at you, but can I say how much I hate the term "dead wood". Completely disrespectful to people who often have done their best for the club. This phrase is in my Room 101
agreed. was just a call back to the original poster. we're a top 6 club now - we've a large number of players registered with us - not all of them will be up to the standard that RDZ requires but that doesn't mean they are not incredibly talented footballers who are likely to have successful careers.

Well to be fair its not really the "squad" - its just a sense of who is registered with us - we have had this scale of squad/loanees/churn over Summer for a few years now. There will be plenty of loans , a few outcomings and i doubt very few out of Khadra, Scherpen, Connolly, Sima, Adingra, Alzate, Koslowski, and Karbownik - the senior loanees - will be with us come September (Adingra ? , Koslowski ? would be my bets )
And there will be some key incomings (left sided centre back, full back(s) at very least). And a whole bunch of u21s currently on loan to lower league clubs and out of contract are i guess going to be released - although some will continue their EFL loan progress at higher standard (eg: Rushworth, Leonard would be my bets).
And then some of the u21s will be off to EFL clubs for the first time.

Re: João Pedro.

Pedro is not his last name, he has his entire first name on the back of his shirt, just as Alisson does for example.

He is also, I believe, Home Grown, by virtue of having come across to Watford at such a young age (similar situation to Buonanotte and Kozlowski).

Sorry - agree with you there. I'll clear out that phrase from my vocab :p.

So: clear out those who probably aren't Prem / Europa ready. That can either be a sale or a loan out, depending on individual players and what opportunities arise.

Target for me would be a strong squad of 25 first-team ready players for the Prem, and then a "few" (exactly how many TBC depending on how the off season goes for the youngsters who've been given some minutes recently) extra to help cover the additional Europa load.

I'm expecting the list from the OP to be very different once we reach the end of the window. We'll cash in on 1 or 2 high profile first team from this season, keep a solid core group, but there could be a bit of turnover amongst the fringe with hopefully improvements that add competition for places across all positions.

He's commonly known as Pedro so i'm going with that. But agreed.
He doesn't (just) qualify as HGP - won't have been with a club for three consecutive years before his 21st birthday. Signed for Watford in January 2020 - he was 21 on Sept 26 2022.

I read somewhere João Pedro became home grown in Jan 2023, no idea where I saw it.

Every highlight I’ve seen has the commentator using ‘Joao Pedro’.

Yep…..been at Watford for 3 years before he became 21 so qualifies as HGP I think.
Think when I read its not three years, it's three seasons- or the third season counts as the whole 'year', something like that.
I might be completely wrong, I often am.
