Sports sports sports!
Button doesn't deserve it.
If Hamilton was in that car, he'd have won it, and we all know that.
Button's a likeable chap and whatnot, much more so than Hamilton, but having the best team behind you is more often than not the main factor in winning the drivers championship.
It simply has to be David Haye.

They still need an element of skill to be able to drive the cars at that speed though. Honestly could you, or anybody else not trained to do so, do it?
It's like all these people that sit at home and slag off tennis player and footballers even though they wouldn't know where to start, and have no talent of their own.

Also, I highly doubt Hamilton would have won in that car. As once the car was taking a dive in results he probably would have piled it into a wall somewhere, or spun off, or hit the neutral button and been at the back of the grid sulking that he couldn't retain his championship title.

If Button (or any other F1 driver, for that matter) didn't have millions of pounds worth of equipment and technology behind them, they would achieve nothing.

That's why I feel he's the least worthy on the shortlist there, because his achievement is far more due to his equipment than anyone else's (possibly bar Cavendish, although in his case the equipment would cost nowhere NEAR as much as is spent on F1 cars and clearly there is an immense physical involvement with what he does) on that list.

If Button wins, he should hand the award over to Ross Brawn and the technicians, because without them he would not be there. If he were that great a driver and driving skill were more relevant to winning World Titles than the car you're in, why has he spent years doing sod all at the arse end of the grid before getting into a good car and suddenly winning?

Very weak list this year ...

Someone else said that, I really don't understand how anyone can say that. I think it's the strongest list for years - possibly the strongest list ever.

There are six world champions; a cyclist who has dominated sprint finishes this year and who has achieved a number of Tour de France wins on par with a handful of greats; the captain of an Ashes-winning team and a tennis player who at one stage was world no 3 - the highest ever ranking for a British male. Only Ryan Giggs looks like he's there to make up the numbers - normally, there are three or four makeweights in the list. It's a stonking list

This does make the discussion a little interesting.
As there's plenty of comparisons between F1 and Pro Tour cycling.
Would Cav have won the 23 top flight races, without his team, or for that fact, in one of the other team, undoubtably NO he wouldn't.

But the team doesn't really get a look in, a la constructors championship.
I have wondered before, on here, if top flight cycling is the most selfless sport, as it is purely the individual the counts, but virtually impossible to count without your team.

I do love the fact you can go into a Scott dealership and buy the exact same bike Cav rides, ok so it might set you back nearly 10k, but still.

I can't stand Jenson Button, smug twat, already up on stage waving to the crowd like he's already won it.

Ennis for me I reckon. Takes enough effort to be good at just one event, never mind seven. & I doubt she gets paid £5 million a year for that either, unlike the idiot
Button.

If only it made you go that fast, you could do an extra deliverys in no time.

Cav, Daley, Strauss, Ennis, even Tweddle (who has no chance given the minority status of her sport).

Please not the bloke who drives an expensive car round in circles for a vast fee.

The Sheffield Arena always seems to big for this, I think it makes it look cold and not very personal.

Do people buy tickets for it or are they free, the people at the back must have a worst view than the away end at Withdean, that bad.

Giggs has been a great player over the years but I don't quite understand why he's nominated this year as opposed to any other year.

BBC sucking up to Fergie maybe? Not that they bloody should, the pathetic, grudge-bearing old lush.

I think the short list is drawn up by 30 sports journalists but I am unsure who they are and what influence the BBC has over them.

I see James Corden is in the front row is he not a pal of Jensons.

I like the way they are giving the sports personalities a microphone this year so we can judge their "personality" too. Young Tom Daley has got a long long career in front of him.

Shame it seems Jocko Murray couldn't be arsed to turn up or even get on a video link.

Another Vote here for the legend Cav

He is the lucky one, I noticed Wendy Hougenarval however these days I only have eyes for Lizzie Armistead, like Vicky she could give Cav a run for his money.

On the new IOC changes 2012 should be 3 Golds for Vicky but I reckon Lizzie could match her with 2 maybe 3 of her own.

Incredible scenes on Betfair - Giggs has just been backed off the boards in from over 3/1 into an 8/11 odds on favourite.

Button has gone in the reverse direction from odds on out to over 3/1.

Kinda matches what happened last year when Hamilton was backed in heavily on the night, with Adlington the favourite prior to that. Then Hoy popped up as the 8/1 winner. Tonight Ennis is the 11/1 3rd favourite.
