To be fair, and I say this as someone who HATES Button and LOVES Lewis, that argument doesn't really add up because surely it's all about who the competition is. If you win the F1 championship in an Olympic year then, as wrong as you or I may think it is, you won't win SP. If you win it this year like Button has, although it's the same achievement, it could well be enough to be SP.

Personally I'd go for David Haye though.

I think this is a top post.

How is it a weak list?

Jenson Button - F1 World Champion.
Mark Cavendish - Tour de France (8+ stages); Giro d[italia (5+ stages); Milan-Sanremo.
Tom Daley - British and World Champion.
Jessica Ennis - World Champion of Heptathlon.
Ryan Giggs - Most decorated player in English football EVER.
David Haye - World Heavyweight Champion.
Phillips Idowu - World Champion and World Indoor Champion.
Andy Murray - 6 singles titles and broke into the top 3 of the world.
Andrew Strauss - Masterminded the Ashes victory.
Beth Tweddle - World Champion of the 'Floor'.

Well as you listed four I presumed they were in that order!! Fair enough then, I definitely wouldn't have Murray anywhere near it.

Murray was ranked 2nd in the world. The highest ranking of a British player since Fred Perry - a record that has stood for 70+ years.

He has also won 6 titles in 2009, beating Djokovic, Federer, Nadal and so on along the way.

Mark Cavendish - Tour de France (8+ stages); Giro d[italia (5+ stages); Milan-Sanremo.

Pendant alert.
Cav won 6 at Le Tour, this year, and 3 at the Giro, 1 classic, as mentioned.
Plus 13 other wins, making him the most successful pro rider,
3 wins more than his nearest rival and 12 wins clear of any rival from another team.

Still, as I said earlier, far and away the best performance by any brit, ever.

Other than Button, Murray, Giggs and Strauss, the other athletes sport's do not get constant year round coverage in the mainstream media, and therefore their achivements are usually only in the news for a limited period of time.

Personally I'd go for Button, but Beth Tweddle has an outstanding case, as she has won gold in every of the major competitions she ahs competed in. Great acheivement!!

I thought I'd already written, Cav for me, obviously pressed the wrong button.

I don't quite see that logic AT, unless you are using the programme title literally, but hey when was the last time that happened.

Obviously BW's achievement is stunning, but in the cold light of day he was 'only' 4th in Le Tour. (At least that's how a non cyclist would see it).

As Gwylan says Cav did something no other Brit has ever done, in that tour.
But not only that he has repeatedly spanked all of the sprint cycling world, 23 times, from March to September.

I expected to be called on this one.

My logic is that last year was Cav's year. He announced himself as the fastest sprinter in the world. This year, he backed that up with a record number of wins, which I cannot deny. BUT, we all knew he'd do it this year, and ultimately the British public aren't gonna care about stage race wins.

Whereas, Wiggins emerged (unexpectedly) as a genuine GC candidate, and was almightily unlucky in my opinion not to finish on the PODIUM at the tour de france. I think ultimately the only thing a non-cyclist will really appreciate is yellow jerseys, and he genuinely came very close to it!

For being 36, winning the Premier League again, being PFA Player of the Year and being brilliant? Don't think anyone can have too many complaints about that really, it's not as if he's likely to win.

a lifetime achievement award is certainly fair enough for all he has done in his career, but being one of the best sportsmen in the 2009 calendar year? do me a favour
