Some Polish bloke just knocked on my door asking for money

10 minutes ago some bloke just knocked on my door. He handed me a card, the card said he was Polish and that he had throat cancer, he was homeless and needed money.

He put his hand out and I told him to go.

I felt rattled by this, I also felt sorry for him, but then I thought this has got to be some sort of con, so I decided to see where he was.

I looked around the corner and there he was counting out a hand full of money, notes in actual fact.

I have now called the Police because he is not skint, he is going around ripping people off and making out he has throat cancer.

And now it makes me wonder, is this what is going to keep happening in this country.

Something similar happened to us about two weeks ago. Some kid (I mean eleven year old girl) came knocking on our door saying her house had burnt down and her mum and dad had no money to buy her clothes.

We live in the middle of nowhere, not amongst other houses so my first concern was this child was wandering around the Hampshire countryside.

I said I was sorry I couldn't help her but I would phone someone to come and collect her if she wanted. She said oh no my mum is at TheXXXXX (local pub), uhm, if you have no money why are you at the pub? So I said well, sorry. And off she went.

Then my neighbour told me the same thing happened ten minutes after to her so I phoned the village bobby and he went to the pub but she had gone.

Good on you for calling the police. (Although I hope you didn't use 999).

Assuming he was a scam merchant, this sort of person can deflect money and attention from real charity cases.

I generally try not to give money to this sort of incident. Sometimes Western Road is inundated with Gypsy type ladies with their little cards. They are quite prevalent in the Westdene/Withdean area.

What kind of idiot hands over money on the strength of that 'door step' delivery?

f***ing idiots deserve to lose their cash...kind of divs who respond to Nigerian 'you've won a million dollars but you need to deposit two grand into our account now' scam

My mate got thrown out of a bar by a bouncer on Saturday. In his bordem while waiting for us to come out he asked the polish bouncer where he was from in Poland. The guy said here. My mate was a bit miffed and said no where in Poland. The bouncer started getting even more arsey and repeating here, here. My mate gave up after that. Every Pole I've met has been a right arsey bastard.

Perhaps Polish is easier to spell than something like Lithuanian?

I have met a fair amount of Poles and they tend to have a better grasp of the English language than some people I have come across.

Sorry, the social welfare here is quite good, if you're in a good enough condition to come begging in an outer suburb, you're in a good enough condition to claim housing, money, clothes and food off the state. I'll give money to charities for the elderly, homeless, etc but not some begging scum on the doorstep.

Perhaps they have the view that we see nations like Poland as being extremely inferior and it would help their cause. Or they just need an excuse to avoid speaking English.

How do you know he hasn`t got throat cancer. Did you do a biopsy.

Went to Stratford upon Avon last year with the other half and the hotel staff (well the lot in the breakfast room anyway!) were nearly all Poles....and they deserve earning better cash over here than they would do at home for doing jobs like that

If you actually read the immigration policy with regard to many of these European nations, you'd know they generally can't claim benefits within a certain period of their arrival.

But don't let that get in the way of a good story.

Frankly if you want to go and do the sort of office-cleaning, burger-flipping, trolley-collecting jobs that a lot of (often highly qualified) Poles etc are doing, then just carry on moaning....

Edna I don't think this is really an anti-Pole (or any other nationality thread) just anti-beggar. I was curious as to why the beggar himself should bring nationality into it.

I read an interesting story about a Polish woman who was a highly qualified Dentist. She wanted to get started, but the barriers she faced were unreal. It is a very poor immigration policy when you have so many hard working, qualified people that have their hands tied. Particularly in a field such as dentristry, when we have a severe shortage!
