Passion isn't exclusive to local lads.

It seems one of the most common complaints during this season was the lack of passion, how all the loan signings have no interest in playing for us, lets put the youngsters in.

Bradley Johnson performed well on loan for us. The turnaround in our season was on the backs of Whing, Hart, Owusu, Dicker, and Andrews. The last three are loan players, Whing was playing for, among other reasons, a contract next year (preferring league one), Hart was playing to prove people wrong.


It is a footballer's job to play football, their professionalism, their love of the game, and their pride leads to them playing with passion (and yes, Hart and Whing had this in spades too, along with their other motivations).

Being local isn't going to automatically make you passionate or protect you from the demoralising effects of poor form or club politics, and coming to us because we offer you a contract, doesn't make you a mercenary who doesn't care about the club's fortunes.

Exactly. There is also a big difference between bringing in players permanently at the start of the season, which is presumably what Slade wants to do, and bringing in lots of loans players as a desperate measure. Just because a player is not born and bred Brighton, does not mean he cannot be passionate about playing for the club. Can anyone think of a more passionate Albion player than Andrew Whing (Midlands born and a Villa season ticket holder)?

IMHO we brought in a number of players last season in midfield who offered less than Fraser. We thought the grass was greener with other players, but the result was horrific, as Fraser is a very neat and tidy hard-working player who gave his all week in week out. Jarrett, Johnson, Savage and Bangura came in and showed us very little. All they did was pick up a wage and hold Frasers development back.

Improving on him is therefore not as easy as some of you may think. IF this is true, I will be sad to see him go.

Russell Slade has today made shock announcements on who he will be retaining and who will be releasing as he ruthlessly looks to build a side that will challenge for the top 6 in League One next season.

The name at the top of his let-go list, which will jolt just about every Albion supporter, is 15-goal man Glenn Murray, who Slade has mercilessly decided is not part of his plans for a play-off push next season and will be placed onto the transfer list. Offers will only be considered, however, if they meet Slade's valuation of Murray at 400k.

The Brighton boss has not yet cited his reasons for listing the talismanic forward, though an announcement is expected later this afternoon with the confirmation of further surprises in Doug Loft, John Sullivan, and Tommy Fraser not being asked to return for the Seagulls next year.

Agreed, but passion is what often covers up deficiencies in ability. It will only get you so far.

The biggest problem we had last season was a team FLOODED with loan signings, most of whom couldn't give a monkeys. I don't expect us to be following that pattern again under Slade. A few quality PERMANENT signings, and we'll see Slade get enough professional pride out of his players to see us in the top half.

McLard is permanent, and only passionate about the local burger joints. A permanent deal is no guarantee they will give a monkeys unfortunately.

Fraser cared a bundle, and was a decent player to boot. I made that a decent player, and I'll be sad if this is true.
