water proof trousers? I saw many a nerd today standing out there with them on... how many of you wore them or were you hard like me (or stupid) and wore jeans?

They're not nerdy they're sensible. My dad had all waterproofs, I wore one my dad's waterproofs, as I don't have one myself, and jeans - got bloody soaked.
