Hello Guys

In the early hours of this morning (bout 3ish) i had my 4th bout of sleep paralysis.
It is a very scary thing to have happen to you.
You wake up and you think you are dead because you cant move any part of your body. You cant even speak. Its horrible.
It dosent frighten me quite as much now because i understand it a bit more, but when it happened for the first time, it was awful.

What happens is, your brain wakes up before anything else and it only last about 5-10 seconds, but it seems like a lifetime. You really think you are dead.

Has or is anyone else suffering from this strage affect :wozza:

I've had this all my life but recently its become more and more common. It is horrible as I find it hard to breath...I don't know what causes it or how to relieve it.

My mate had it once - he said he saw a shadowy figure enter the room and then pin him down. He was unable to move or speak.

Sounds horrible!

Really horrible, I used to get it alot during my clubbing days. I used see all sorts of things either trying to attack me or standing at the end of the bed. In the end I learned to bring myself out of it, you have to stop for a moment and really concentrate and then try and jolt your head forwards really hard, but even that doesn't always work.

To this day I sleep with somethnig over my face because of it, that was always my failsafe - if I woke up and could see people in my room I knew they weren't really there because my face was covered. All this took months to work out and there were times when I was scared to go to sleep. All self inflicted though so can't really complain

Having a sleep disorder can be very distressing and whilst i haven't suffered from paralysis it sounds really frightening. Have you talked to your doctor about it? There must be something that can make it stop. A few months ago i was put on Mirtazapine to help me sleep right through the night as i was waking up every single hour after having nightmares and by the morning i felt shattered. It HAS helped a lot.

I had night frights when I was young where I would wake up and see quite disturbing things (monsters, ghosts ect at that age) and then suddenly as soon as I woke up properly I would feel sick and dizzy and it was like I was in some sort of trance. Luckily seems I have grown out of that though thank f***.

Sleep disorders can often be related to stress by the way, I would recommend seeing your GP? It may help.

Had this a couple of times. Just laying there aware of everything around me but unable to move and with the sensation of not being able to breathe. 'Shouting out' to girlfriend but actually making no sound as unable to move lips. This is said to occur more when stressed and/or overtired. And at certain stages of sleep when the physical and mental wake at different stages - or something along those lines (no expert!). I had a couple of mini episodes where it starts to happen when I've woken up briefly and am drifting back to sleep.

I've luckily never (yet!!) (touch wood!!) experienced the horrifying hallucinations of witches/vampires/devils/monkeys sitting on your chest but many people believe there is a connection between these hallucinations and the witch hunting that used to take place as people believed they had been put under a spell by these 'horrifying', 'evil' herbalists!!

I'll try to find the source. Good to know we're not alone. As Albion supporters, we're never alone :)

Its nice to know that i am not alone. I was interested to hear that some of you say that you had seen things while this was happening. Well i had something happen to me one night that still frightens the life out of me and because of it i have to have the hall light on at night.
One night about 10 yrs ago i woke up unable to move then i lifted up through the roof of my bungalow and i was hovering about 30ft up. I looked down and i could see my car and even my cat sitting on the wall by my front door.
I vividly remember the very cold air on my face and looking over towards the downs, because the sky was getting light.
Then all of a sudden i shot off at about 100mph towards Worthing, skimming the roof tops. It was amazing, but i couldn't move.
Then i woke up and found myself in bed.
After getting my head together i unlocked the front door and there was my little cat Billy sitting on the wall by my front door.

I still cant explain it to this day, but i was so sure that it happened and no, i wasnt on any drugs.
Please dont laugh :O

I never realised this had a name, never spoken to anyone about it before but I've totally had the paralysis and scary monsters coming at me, although it has always seemed like a dream to me and I am able to pinch myself hard or jerk my head up to get out of it. It hasn't happened in a while, though. I always assumed it was a really nasty dream.

It's happened to me a number of times. It can be when I wake up in the morning or I can be sitting in a armchair late at night and I can drift off, and it'll happen. It is quite scary but as Billy tf says, you've just got to concentrate, and try and jolt yourself awake. In realtime though, it is only thought to last a second or two, but if feels like a lifetime.

Never had this. Once though, when I was about eight, I had a dream that still gives me the shakes to this day.

I was having a horrible nightmare, which eventually woke me. I was scared so went to my parents room, as I often did after a bad nightmare. Opened their door, got into their bed, then I looked at them and saw they were wolves. At which point, I really woke up.

Has anyone who suffers from this also get false awakenings where you think you've woken up, go to turn on a light because you can't see properly only for the lights not to work? They say sleep paralysis and false awakenings are related.

Only just re-found this thread. In response to your question: yes and it's horrible. You really are convinced 'it's over' and that you're awake. You stretch over to turn the light on and prepare to regain your breath but then suddenly realise you're actually still not awake. And it's SO realistic.

Christ that sounds horrific. I never knew this even existed. Is there any treatment for this? I hope you do not have too many more of these in the future. I suffer from severe lack of sleep night in night out due to pain but that sounds bloody awful
