I was merely providing some names off a long list, but that’s why I gave the link too so you can make your own mind up. Actually it’s been even worse over the last 3 years than prior to that!

Anyway I have never heard the Brighton recruitment team sing and don’t know either of the songs you refer to

You were just making a spurious point using players long since binned off from the Club and signed in a previous regime in a different league.

Where football is concerned, is there anything other than wishful thinking?

Gerrard appears to be an excellent manager. But Potter's a better coach. Currently, when all the ****ing endless noise and lazy punditry about big clubs is filtered out, the Albion have better players in most positions and are a better team (imho). In terms of development, Brighton were a League 1 club just over a decade ago and playing at Withdean. The club's development is EXTRAORDINARY. We are also all in with a strategy that targets (and plays) the best value and young talent according to Tony's algorithms. This appears to be a supercharged version of Southampton's (old) and more targeted version of Chelsea's (recent) academy model; elite level sustainability is clearly the desired outcome. If Potter and his players continue to find ways to put the ball in the net - there are very few sides in the PL that can out-football Brighton. Ambition Villa (with Gerrard at the helm and Purslow's money) will always make more noise than Brighton and undoubtedly sign more established talent - but Brighton are currently the ninth best side in the PL and with more belief i.e. casting off the psychological baggage of believing big club hyperbole, our club can overachieve on its stated 'established top10' objective. However, if Potter left...

Not really, no! But sometimes there's more reason to believe than others.

I think our progression has been extraordinary, but that's the past and we need to consider where we are now. It's been a remarkable progression and we're certainly not finished yet, I believe our curve is still on the rise. But I think there's no reason to think Potter's a better coach than Gerrard, or our desire to sign players and develop them into first players will be more successful than Villa's model of buying players capable of playing immediately.

.

There were roughly 15-20 signings there per season, for however many years you want to go back. About 20% of those, being generous, have worked, which I think is a fair counter argument to the original comment made about how wise their investments have been bearing in mind the eye watering losses they have made to buy those players. This includes players bought in the last few years in the Premier League.

If you read down that list and drool in envy, then fair enough.

2-0 win over Brighton on his debut ?

A game we dominated but I take your point, he had a Bielsa like influence on Mings who scored a cracker of a goal

 I’m now convinced

Brighton factually.....
I wouldn’t make him play for the U23 unless there was a reason for it. If he was giving his all then so be it. At the end of the day what we offer him a week over the course of 18 Months above what he gets now he will most likely recoup anyway as a signing in fee.
If he signs a new deal great, if not and a good offer comes we accept it but it’s still
His decision. If he decides to run 18 months down I’ll enjoy watching a fantastic player only disappointment will be we didn’t get the fee we may deserve for assisting his development but at the same time he would have done a lot for the club

This with cowbells, no way could anyone feel bitter if he ran his contract down.
Another 18 months of his masterful displays in midfield would be incredible.
He has been a sheer joy to watch, and you can tell he loves it here, being a big fish in a small pond.

Funnily enough, I'm not all that interested in their signings over the last decade. Forgive my negligence, but I think it's thoroughly irrelevant to any point being discussed by anyone other than you. They have wasted a lot of money, no question. So have we, no question. So has every club at pretty much every level of the football pyramid. They're in a very fortunate position to be able to keep splashing the cash without too much concern to recouping funds, which is very different to the majority of other clubs and gives them a clear advantage over clubs like ours who try to run sustainably.

I think all of us were disappointed how quickly and easily they signed Danny Ings in the summer, personally I think most of us would have taken him.

I think PeterT is doing better than you credit. He's pointed out how much they've spent on players, and it's way, way more than us. But that 'spend' only concerns the transfer fee. If you add in wages, then it's even higher. And when we factor in wages, I'm not entirely sure I'd want Ings: 29, lots of injuries over the last five years or so, enormous wages. More importantly, he's the last player Bloom would have wanted, because all of that goes completely against our model (I can compare Welbeck, if you really want) and, wherever Villa finish vis-a-vis us this season or next, I'd rather our model to theirs.

Count me out. Yes he had one very good PL season and two decent ones but I think he is overrated. Sure he'd be a decent addition to the first team but £25m transfer fee and £6m per year... no thanks.

Fair enough. I was just attempting to counter your original point that ‘…their (Villa’s) investment seems particularly wise.’ A record of their recent transfer dealings and charts showing that no club has lost more money than them in those years might suggest otherwise, especially when they have achieved nothing with all that spending and remain trophyless for 25 years plus. I can upload you a few graphs and charts to prove that but you’ll probably just dismiss them as irrelevant (or too factual).

Albion may have also spent a lot but let’s not forget where we were in the late 90s compared to where we are now, a mighty achievement, whereas Villa have arguably fallen backwards in that time despite spending more than anyone else. And substantially more than most.

The argument about whether Gerrard is a good manager at this level and will cut it over a sustained period will be proven one way or the other anyway, so any view you have on that will be proven right or wrong soon enough regardless. I agree that he has another large pot of cash to spend at a potentially big club so if he screws that up then I guess he won’t be taking over from Herr Klopp any time soon.

I think he will sign a new contract with a buy out clause put in for something like £70m

If we don’t sell but instead keep him for 18 months I’d be delighted.
If we don’t sell then we haven’t ‘lost’ money in my view, we invested about the same as for Locadia (let that sink in……). He’s paid it back and then some.

I was being a bit tongue in cheek.

They only works if you make all the other players work only 18 months left train with the U23s and then the club become ‘bad’ when trying to attract new players.

Likewise he can earn way more to sign on a free for a bigger club + easier deal than him signing a new deal if we plan to sell any way. In Bissouma eyes he owes us nothing, both parties signed a deal - that deal is running out and he may think he is better off elsewhere for whatever reasons.

The agent will be doing his job seeking out suitors and trying to make sure his client gets the best deal possible.

My comments were made very much tongue in cheek.

If for example he plays his best football ever for next three months and we finish say 7th - then his pick of clubs in summer will be far better than now - and Villa won't be the only show in town - and his price will have gone up despite only 12 months left on contract by then

If wood is worth 20m or so to Toon now then Biss is worth 50m straight cash next summer

We just need to sell him for as much as possible to whoever is interested if he is not going to sign a new deal.

The difference in prize money in finishing 10th instead of 16th is £11 million. Bissouma could be worth that to the Albion or Villa this season. Real value in the higher position could be nearer £30 million.

Agreed. I think both parties will be "happy" to run the contract down. Biss for obvious reasons bigger salary, signing on fee etc. Us if we know he's not going to sign a new contract gives us another 18 months to get Caicedo/ AN Other replacement ready to take over for the 23/24 season. Also the brand value to us in being able to attract better players if we have a top half finish this year and then more progress next season in Biss's last year is intangible. All that together is worth more than the £20m we'll get for him in the summer (personally think there's no way we will sell this month).

1. Persistent rumours
2. Starting on the bench for his NT, something that sometimes happens if a player has his mind elsewhere
3. Caicedo recalled

I'm starting to get a little bit worried.

Snap out of it man, eat some pizza, drink a beer, smoke some weed, everything will be fine, we are safe, probably better we cash in now. We played well when he was out of the squad, yes he will be a miss, but no one stays forever, not even you, when Potter goes.

I wouldnt mind most of those things...

I dont think it would be a disaster if he leaves and would understand if the club accepts a big offer but I'd really want him to finish this season just to get that mythical top 10 spot.
