This has been my understanding before this tournament.

Makes sense to be honest. If we were to have assessed Adingra/Mitoma as a 2-3 week injuries, then their respective countries would probably still have them in for the business end of the tournament. As such, clubs can’t withdraw them from an entire tournament and then play them.

FIFA not PL. and it does make sense. it is to stop clubs pulling players out for phantom injuries.

Sounds absolutely mad. Surely their employer (their club) should have the final say on if they will allow their employee leave to play for another team.
If you asked for leave from your work to go and work for another company for a month and they refused to let you why on earth would you be banned from working!?

Japan haven’t named their squad yet so as Mitoma is unlikely to be named does that mean he could play for us if he makes a quicker than expected recovery, as effectively won’t have withdrawn from the squad. Unless Japan want to assess the injury themselves so call him up anyway.

Of course this isn’t normally an issue as PL games don’t happen the same time as most internationals, but the AFCON and Asia Cup take place over a month so clash with PL game. To protect the integrity of tournaments and to stop clubs pulling players cause they don’t want to lose them from vital games, FIFA will ban players that withdraw through injury from playing for their clubs until the tournament is over.

How is that legally inforcable though?

Because football at the moment is governed by FIFA, they set the rules, federations and clubs have to abide by those rules. Until such times as it’s legally challenged there is nothing that can be done. Which is why governments and the EU are trying to put in more regulatory bodies to stop what is basically a monopoly, but that’s still a long way off and likely to meet a lot of resistance.

Adingra was named in the final Ivory Coast squad. They can call up a replacement up to 24 hours before their first game but the injury would have to be ratified by the CAF medical committee (what that process is I don’t know, does the player need to be present for CAF to assess him?). Under FIFA rules this would still mean Simon has withdrawn from a squad he was named in and could be prevented from playing for us until the end of the tournament if he recovers from his injury.

Adingra did get a full season at USG including European football though right ? And 3 of his goals were against Sheffield Utd, Burnley & Luton. Like I say he’s been good, but I hope there’s more to come especially in bigger games

two of these teams we found very hard to breakdown so it might not be a case of its only Burnley or Sheffield united....
