Well, the weasels who switched their votes have now given it to Anson straight: "Your media killed you." That is as opposed to Russia, where it's the media that get killed.

So many different interpretations of this, as seen above. Personally I think it is just an excuse. Even if it wasn't an excuse, I think Fifa's activities are fair game though I can see the timing argument. Or our media should just leave Fifa alone, like everyone else.

I cannot be bothered to read all of this but given England only got one vote which was not their own suggests the issue is deeper routed. Interestingly the England bid team were not even sure whether it was Japan or Cameroon who backed their bid. I think it was a combination of a shambolic and gaff prone bid team, a real under standing of football politics and pitching the bid incorrectly. England continually banged on their bid being the safest (mainly due to no new stadia being built, and the bid were still banging on about this yeaterday) but as we all know FIFA is mainly interested in expanding the football family/world. This is no surprise and has been their agenda or years if not decades. England did not pay any meaningful attention to this element.

It was no surprise they lost the bid.... but I was suprised they were so out of touch to only receive one other vote.

I don't think you can blame the bid times as much as you'd like, lets not forget between England, USA, Australia they only got 6 votes, out of 44. The agenda for these world cups had been set long before these bids were compiled.

Perhaps..., if you bothered to dig a little deeper, you'd notice Murdoch, who runs The Sun and is arguibly the Tories most important donor has a huge interest in seeing the BBC topple and people eventually having to pay for news. Something that you and I currently take for granted.


Er, I think you find you currently pay £145.50 a year for the 'free' news.

If this is FIFA's objective then why then don't they come out and say that, and only invite bids from developing nations? It would save the likes of us from submitting a pointless bid.

The arrogance of the FIFA officials who selected these two venues beggars belief, Russia always was marginal for the reasons already stated but Qatar ? That is just plain ridiculous. You'll never convince the vast majority of people that these decisions are highly questionable. I just hope the World's press and media investigate FIFA and get these morons to resign at the very least.

I agree totally with what Andrew Neill said on ITV news last night. If the World Cup is the price to pay for a free and investigative press to do their job and expose the corruption of unaccountable bodies like FIFA, then it's a very small price to pay.

QED - to get one vote off the old spivs is indicative that their arrogance and corruption is evident (if as yet unproven in a court of law), not only are they venal, they are also spiteful, vindictive, and unable to separate a free press from the representatives of a country that allows that freedom. We're better off without them and their dark, nefarious corridors of power. A large shit on all their heads.

Other than clutching at straws, I'm not sure what to make of you suggesting the bid team was not as bad as I suggest because they almost polled as many votes as two also rans. Have you been advising Audly Harrison in the past week?

Japan's Fifa executive committee member has told the BBC that England's World Cup bid humiliation may have been a result of a backlash against the British media.

Junji Ogura, long considered one of England's closest allies, praised the strength of the England bid and its presentation despite the fact that it crashed out of the voting process in round one, eliminated after picking up only two votes.

"I thought England was a very strong candidate.," said Ogura. "Their presentation was one of the best presentations.

It's totally complicated... nobody will say which country they voted for.

"But I think there was a big influence from the BBC and the Sunday Times. These reports possibly influenced people. It made damage for some people."

I think we could have literally done anything and received the outcome, the bid 'process' is a big dress up, the real business is done on the tours and in hotel lobbys in the weeks before, unfortunately some countries are able to get away with more than us, in terms of sweeteners, if you see what I mean..

They do. They talk repeatedly about taking the game into new areas and growing the family. It's no secret. And it is not about literally taking the game to developing nations, but about world legacy and other things. England's bid only contained a very small element which addressed this particular item.

It's the old pissing in Swimming pools argument. If there is a piss in a swimming pool, you don't get rid of the Swimming pool. You stop pissing in it. Or in this case, you blame the person pissing in the pool, not the person who catches them doing it.

I just hope the press can get enough on FIFA to bring them down now. Pound of flesh is the next step in this process.

I just don't think we could ever have matched others in that stake, as our press would have slaughtered us once it was uncovered

Absolutely spot on.

I am not sure why anyone would criticise the BBC and others for highlighting corruption. It was not them that lost the bid. It was our perceived unwillingness to line the pockets that needed lining. At least I hope that is the case.

Nobody is criticising the BBC for highlighting corruption, they are criticising the BBC for their TIMING. I agree, in hindsight the bid was a lost cause months ago, but it is also a fact that more votes were lost by our media. Under the guidance of Blatter, the FIFA delegates are fickle and vindictive.
