No, but if we were to join, we would first of all need a fairly long period where the pound stays fairly static when measured against the euro. This clearly has not happened yet.

Could never see why we haven't joined.

True. We could learn a lot from our mainland cousins. I recall the last discussion NSC had about what is good about Britain. The financial services sector was mentioned as being the best in the world. :nono:

The one good thing about us not being in the euro is that my german bank account gets fatter by the day. Not that there is a lot of money in it but what is in it has grown rapidly.

Can someone please explain, in idiot-proof terms, the pros and cons of joining the Euro?

pros: no currency fluctations to worry about. (though they can be a benefit sometimes)
cons: unable to make economic decisions for ourself.

In the last month, I've two friends who work in different areas of the finance industry, both tell me that they think it's inevitable that we'll be joining soon. What with the recent news story on BBC which mentioned the 10 year anniversary and spoke about the pros and cons of us joining, it's got me thinking that there is a big behind-the-scenes pushing for this.

It can't happen without a referendum.

no, certain people with the agenda of supporting the Euro are using the current economic situation as evidence we should be in. but we'd have been borrowing even more over the past 10 years at Euro interest rates and the Banks would still have got involved in the credit swaps issue.

Depends on what rate it is proposed we go in at.

At the moment no, but at 1.4/1.5 possibly.

It does worry me though that we would be handing over the ability to alter our own interest rates.

As a matter of interest,The Greeks are quite seriously considering pulling out!!

Financial services and our national currency are completely different matters. In the eyes of many UK and in particular London is the worlds financial capital.
