In 1938 over 10,000 people paid to cross the footbridge on August Bank Holiday Monday.

i can remember my dad paying a toll to drive over the road bridge when i was little must have been late 1960's.

Me to, I still have the ticket somewhere.

I have many happy memories of walking home over that footbridge and sailing/canoeing under it. My uncle Bill used to live in the bungalow on the other side.

That's as may be. Wikipedia says that 'the bridge deck of a retractable bridge can be rolled or slid backwards to open a gap for crossing traffic, usually a ship on a waterway'

But in the picture the middle bit of the bridge appears to have simply DE-MATERIALISED. Where is this retraction of which you speak?
