But in the picture the middle bit of the bridge appears to have simply DE-MATERIALISED. Where is this retraction of which you speak?

everytime I see that bridge I am constantly amazed at how unbelievably, gob-smackingly ugly it is. There are better looking motorway flyovers. You'd have though that with it being right in the centre of town some effeort would have gone into making it attractive.
