That's as may be. Wikipedia says that 'the bridge deck of a retractable bridge can be rolled or slid backwards to open a gap for crossing traffic, usually a ship on a waterway'

But in the picture the middle bit of the bridge appears to have simply DE-MATERIALISED. Where is this retraction of which you speak? ???

It slide onto the High Street side (left of picture) of the bridge. You can just about make out some of the metal frame of the centre section above the concrete wall.

everytime I see that bridge I am constantly amazed at how unbelievably, gob-smackingly ugly it is. There are better looking motorway flyovers. You'd have though that with it being right in the centre of town some effeort would have gone into making it attractive.

Yep. it is not very pretty, but at the time it was state of the art concrete technology: PS: it does not wobble.

It is scheduled to be replaced, but who is going to pay?

The metal retractable bit slides on rails. It only takes five minutes or less, but the Council workers deliberately hold walking people for half an hour.

Is that Charlie Dimock on the right?

Yes, and it's Perseus on her left in the yellow boiler with the shrimping net handle going straight through his knackers!! By the way, does anyone know when traffic last used the old A27 across the Adur? The stump of the old road leading down to the airport from the Sussex Pad lights (presumably the old road) isn't half narrow and there must have been some meaty traffic jams.

Oops, just seen my dire proof reading in that last sentence. I blame the late night.

cant make it.........waiting for the paint dry, been watching it all day.........its amazing.

In 1936 27,000 people painted a wall and watched it dry in Shoreham and donated the money to the local Pub Landlord.

Nope that is not me in the yellow.

The Flyover over the A27 opened in 1971. The old Toll Bridge closed for motorised traffic the same year.

Main A27 route that was in the 1960s.

TolTiger.JPG

Being single lane with passing points and all the vehicles had to stop to pay the tolls. And there was a longer wait when the gates were closed for the trains.

One day a bus did not make it across. It took the river route.

Or why the Footbridge had to have a sliding middle.

I thought tht looking at the head light arrangement it was an Austin A40 and the badge just above the 8 looks like an Austin.

The headlights do not look like either the anglia 100E (pre about 65) or 105E.

I copied this to word and then blew it up 500% I am certain it is an Austin as it has the Austin figurehead on the bonnet.

Yes - thats an Austin A40, with an RAC badge on the grill too just to confuse the issue...

Although this is a little bit of a hot rod, heres the front of an Anglia Yorkie - does this look more familiar?
