Well no, but my quoting of last night’s xG was in response to a post saying that we can’t open up a defence. You and I can see this isn’t the problem; others can’t, but the stats suggest we are correct.

It’s a useful stat in terms of goals against as well. With Ryan, our xG conceded was well below our actual goals conceded; with Sanchez xG against the xG conceded as more or less equal to actual goals. I’m sure Ryan’s poor stats were a factor in the decision to give Sanchez his chance (and what a great positive he has been this year).

Surely presenting good shooting chances is the definition of ‘looking like scoring’? Otherwise you’d say that no team ever looks like scoring until they actually do score.

Doubt if we will beat last season’s points tally (8 points from 5 games needed), 6 points from possible 24 against teams below us, most points dropped from winning positions with a manager not sacked yet and have not won a game this season after going behind. Also we finished above WHU and Villa last season.
They were pretty ruthless with Houghton when we started going backwards and Potter has a way better squad to work with.

You’ve hit the nail on the head here, we generally play better against the decent teams as they actually come out to play and leave us space to play into. WBA, Sheff Utd, Burnley all sit in their own half knowing our crippling lack of pace and penchant for obsessively overplaying in the box means that they easily stifle our toothless attacks. That’s not a slur against those teams by the way, it’s just sensible management.

Liverpool, ManU, Leeds and Villa pushed forward in big numbers, taking risks. Like other opponents of theirs this season, that was exploited, we created clear openings.

Whilst the likes of unadventurous Hodgson, Allardyce, Dyche and Heckingbottam, even Rodgers, played rope a dope. Counter attacking football. Rodgers version pleasing on the eye due to their star studded squad of internationals. The others not so, but unfortunately, it works too.

Yeah, you get points for scoring more than the opponent. Creating better chances than you concede normally puts you in good stead.

My man of the match was Sanchez, i thought he controlled the ball from all of the passes he received brilliantly ( I lost count of how many!!). Why do we keep doing it. It slows us down, no quick breakaways and all he then does is thump the ball upfield. We might as well put the ball in to the opponents penalty area quicjky and let them get the ball back to Sanchez. At least we would be going forward and might get a lucky rebound, probably the only way we might score. Now is the time to give some of the academy lads a chance at least they are proven goal scorers.

Dont agree with the Chelsea point. We didnt pile 11 men behind the ball for 90% of the game like SU did. I thought we had a good go at them.

But agree with the other points.

Potter has no Plan B vs the park the bus mentality. Look at the bottom 3 and the 2 Palarse games.

They also defended from the front, man marking and pressuring our defenders, sure the had everyone back for set pieces.
But when they did break out, unlike us, they did with pace.

I want it to continue and I believe we will get better and better.

But at the moment we don't look like a team that is going to score at any minute.

Watching the prematch warm up with Sheffield United players smiling and apparently joking, I saw how relaxed they were before the game and thought that might be a factor in their favour.

In the first 25 minutes we were constantly on the back foot and they deserved to score.

After that, there was plenty of huffing and puffing from us but understandably Sheffield United were resolute in defence of an unfamiliar winning position and our forwards were industrious but inept.

I really couldn't see us getting the ball in the net after the disallowed effort from Moder.

When we sacked Hughton we were playing unbelievably poor and negative football, we couldn’t meaningfully complete with top teams, we refused to bring through younger players and we were widely considered to be one of the poorest anti football sides in the league.

All that has been rectified, everyone can see we are heading in the right direction, as a club we look and feel like we are progressing whereas second season under Hughton we were clearly regressing. No way Tony Bloom sacks Potter.

errr because we didn't.

as per my post, I'm not saying we didn't create chances.
We just didn't look capable of putting them away.
And so it proved.

These things happen.
It isn't a criticism of the team over all, but yesterday we were not on top of our game.
And despite my usual optimistic outlook, I really couldn't see us scoring yesterday.

You maybe right, but do you think Bloom will be content with us languishing in 17th?
Don’t forget the prize money where we end up as well.
Andone, Ali J, Connolly, Maupaay, Welbeck - how many of these 5 would be starters in any other Prem side?
We have heard nothing from Potter all season about wanting better/other forwards, other than being content.
He’s hardly a big name to draw decent tried & tested players here?

It wouldn’t surprise me if there was a parting of the way in the summer.

It would surprise me even more if we got rid of all 5 of the above & replaced with 2 top strikers.
I would settle for 3 of them to go. Take your pick ..
