Second test match - England vs South Africa @ Headingly Carnegie

Steyn seems to be a mouthy little f***.

I believe he looks on Andre Nel as a role model

Great effort by Broad and the tail. The fact that those guys batted so well and so bravely for so long, and for much of it against the second new ball, should make the senior batsmen hang their heads in shame.

Re the bowling situation, you'd have to think that if they ignore Hoggy at Headingley then they're bound to ignore him for the remainder of the series.

The South African batting is pretty good and being down in a short series means we've got to gamble in the next test. I'd give Harmison 2 tests to see what he can do - he should be plenty motivated and I still think he's as good if not better than anything else around.

I also really hope we perservere with Broad.

England batting coach Andy Flower has defended the controversial selection of Darren Pattinson for the second Test against South Africa, which is currently being played at Headingley.

"The guy's got a good record from the first half of the season (29 wickets at an average of 20.86), he's the sort of bowler who has prospered at Headingley before, and he was backed,"

Prospered???? SO much so that he could not get ion the team for Notts game at headingley this season!!!!!!

Batting looks a bit light from 4-6

Bell, despite the biggie, still unreliable.
Shah, an almost man, never quite looks test class but can do a one day job.
Fred, picked for his hostile bounce rather than his batting.

Nuff said ?

I believe that this is our best side when all are fit:

Cook
Strauss
Vaughan
Pietersen
Bell
Flintoff
Read
Broad
Jones, S
Sidebottom
Panesar.

Subs: Collingwood, Prior, Anderson, Harmison, Hoggard.

I don't believe there are many other test class players than that lot. The batting is especially weak and I reckon Prior as a batsmen is as good a shout as any other contender, but I don't think his keeping is up to it.

Against the Aussies with the amount of chances he misses we'll be needing to get the equivalent of 12 wickets every innings, and there's no way we could win on that basis.

Someone needs to tell Pietersen that cricket is a TEAM game and you don't need to bat in 20/20 mode when needing to bat for 2 days to save a test match.
Prior must be a shoe-in for the next test now and i would play Swann or Rashid instead of Monty.
Strauss
Cook
Vaughan
Pietersen
Bell
Collingwood
Flintoff
Prior
Rashid
S.Jones

Panesar isn't doing it at the moment, he needs some more variation to help pick up more wickets. I'd like to say bring back Harmison for Pattinson but don't no if he'll ever be back to his best at test match level. If anyone else I'd pick Hoggard. Too early still for Jones and Tremlett hasn't done enough recently.

Hang on, Monty got 3 wickets on a seamers track at Headingley and got wickets on a flat wicket at Lords.

Would suggest he is doing OK at present. The problem is England are not picking their best seamers and Broad has actually created an issue as his bowling is not up to scratch at present.

Agree with regard to Prior. He's still not a test class wicket keeper but will get in because too many of our batsmen look badly out of sorts. And if any bowler makes way, I'm worried that Tremlett will be called up because he's completely f***ing rubbish. *shudder*

Prior and Simon Jones in for Ambrose and Harrinson please.

Pattinson.

Jones needs more time to get fit before being thrown back in just yet, though he is bowling at good pace just now.
