. The article went on to say that there had been 29 applicants for candidacy so far, but 28 had been rejected and so Putin was the only applicant registered. It's laughable.

And realistically, it is unlikely to extend further west for the foreseeable future.
We now have NATO, recently strengthened as a direct result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, an illegal, unpopular war which has showcased the weakness of the Russian war machine to the world.
..... but with Russia's Hungarian stalking horse well established further west and embedded in the EU.

There is an article in the New York Times that says, despite the bravado from him, Putin is using the back channels to tell the US (not Ukraine) that he is seeking a cease-fire.
Most officials are dismissing it, not just because he is addressing the US, and he maintains that he is not willing to concede one metre of land he has won.
It appears he wants to end the war, as long as he can present it as a victory. This is not a new thing.
Meanwhile there are explosions in Tokmak, and the the Kerch bridge is closed.

Delighted to see that Ukraine have abandoned the Julian calendar in favour of the Gregorian one, which means that they can celebrate Christmas Day today, as opposed to 7th January, along with their Russian neighbours.
Tragic that they have little to celebrate, thanks to their Russian neighbours, but it’s a significant step in the right direction.

'The head of the Ukrainian Air Force said earlier its warplanes had destroyed the ship.' That's warplanes, not drones.
All of a sudden, the war in the air is becoming interesting. No Russian ship is now safe in the Black Sea, whether in port or not. And the Russian occupation of Crimea looks just a bit more precarious. If Russia cannot defend its own ships, in port, in occupied Crimea, then how can it defend its citizens?
Note that the port of Feodosiya is not far from the Kerch bridge. If Feodosiya is within range, then the Kerch bridge is within range, although it is presumably heavily defended. No doubt Ukraine sees the psychological effect of the air strike in the same region as the bridge, mindful that it is a vital supply route, but also an escape route for any Russians who may wish to bugger off back home. Do they want to destroy the bridge? Of course they do. But it may not be prudent to do so just yet. They can only destroy it once, so is it better to wait until its destruction delivers the maximum symbolism?
Ukraine will have an eye on the calendar. January 7th (Christmas day in Russia), and 15-17th March (Russian presidential election) are important dates.

) . We don't know what aircraft was used, but Russia either weren't prepared for such an attack or/ and weren't able to defend against it. Either way.

Why did Ukraine target the landing ship Novocherkassk, apart from the fact it was Russian and it was there, saying 'bomb me, bomb me'?
What did they think the Russians were planning?
Two things come to mind.
1. They were planning an assault on Odesa.
2. They were planning to use the landing ship to establish a bridgehead (on Crimea) to counter a Ukrainian offensive in Crimea.
Usual caveats - I could be completely wrong !
