Perhaps they are exempt? Loads of people don't have to wear masks.

The thing I don't understand is that if you genuinely can't wear a mask, what's the problem with wearing one of those visor things ? If there are 'exemptees' on NSC, I'd genuinely like to know the answer or have I missed something obvious

Yes frustrating. My wife is disabled with a rare lung condition and even our grown up kids need reminding regularly not to come round. Boohoo but it's Christmas, yes and you could soon be going to a funeral.

Sometimes I feel like giving up as my wife starts siding with them

My sympathies.

Last week I went into work for the first time since March to be filmed running an experiment for teaching university students. I was assured the campus would be properly regimented.

When I arrived, two porters securing the main entracnce were wearing masks, one wasn't. Nobody was sanitising door handles. Nobody was washing hands or wearing gloves when entering the building. There were some hand sanitizers the other side of the entrance door, not labeled and not being used by those going in and out.

As I walked up the main stairs someone rushed past me. It was a student not wearing a mask. I gave her the benefit of my opinion.

In the lab, the technician, a Millwall supporter, was wearing no mask, but had his bandana/kerchief thing round his neck. He pulled it over his face when I asked why he wasn't wearing a mask. This is a guy who won't learn how to use email, would have voted 'leave' but didn't bother because politicians 'are all *****', etc. I asked him to wear a mask and he told me he hadn't been supplied with one. He kept out of my way during the day, but....

I spoke to his line manager by email later (line manager is schieding because his wiff is immunocompromised - although he has been to work, and then had to keep away from his wife for 2 weeks). 'Yes, we are gaving problems with him (the technician) and have asked him to stay away from other people'. Brilliant. Masks are freely available from stores. Obviously.

I sent a summary of events to my head of department last week. I used the expression 'shit show'. She hasn't replied. . . . . .

I won't be going into work again until I'm vaccinated.

I work at one of the UK's top 5 universities by the way.

Never, at any time, has the government said 'everyone must wear a mask'. If the rules allow people to not wear a mask then some people won't.

In my job in some areas we have 'best practice'. This means there are some strategies, procedures and process that, in an ideal world, would be the way everyone did things. They are not rules, however and consequently they are not enforced.

So people can do what they want.

I seriously doubt its the most free country in the world. CCTV in every corner, cant even say "****" on television, censoring christmas songs, sternest Official Secrets Act in the world, overall very conservative (at least from what we get to see from the outside) with a deeply, deeply rooted class system, long list of things abandoned a 100 year ago in every other country because it was deemed stuck up and authorian.

Probably the only country without resident registration though, always something. I'd like that part.

Hard to tell until I get a look from the inside though, I'll get back to you on this one.

Does anybody else find those who like to bend/break the rules stressful? I've started to realise this year that I've felt a constant low level of stress due to others who don't stick to rules, especially when it impinges on my life. In particular with Covid, I feel as though I've spent the past 7-8 months in a constant battle with family/friends who will quite innocently suggest that we do something (e.g. pop over, go out for a meal etc) when the rules at that time explicitly state that it's not allowed. You're then put in that situation of either politely reminding them that's not within the rules (and you're always left looking like the bad guy, the party-pooper) or creating other reasons to avoid the awkwardness of having to tell them for the 5th time.

Before this year, I used to find it stressful when I'd try and stick to the speed limit and would be critiqued by others for doing so.

I do say this in the full knowledge that I probably break rules on a weekly basis, so I am most likely a hypocrite. But nevertheless, why can't people just at least make an effort to stick to the rules? We'd all be happy then, wouldn't we? :moo:

Think we can all identify with this.
Sadly with a government that breaks international law and UN conventions in human rights, its own Covid rules, minesterial codes, accountability & audit requirements...........“rule breaking” is seen as perfectly acceptable (as long as you’re the one breaking them - not anyone else of course!)

My wife overheard a football mum arranging a meet up inside with nine couples. Apparently, they were open about discussing this. I have spoken to neighbours who have berated the rule-breakers to see them endlessly inviting friends into their houses.

In short people of the UK and US, in particular, are selfish and only live in the here and now.
All these rule-breaking cU#*$, have IMO caused mammouth deaths and political agendas have been driven by the media who have constantly stoked these rule-breakers up.
Some of these culprits being Morgan, Reid and Rigby. Sack them all and put them in the stocks.

Then we have people getting hot under the collar about the Albion at present, I wonder if these are the rule-breakers?

I may be breaking a rule on Wednesday, this will be the Christmas visit as we wont go over again.
Going to see my Mum (she lives alone) and taking wife, 2 daughters and granddaughter. So that will be six people from three households in one room.
Having NOT broken a single rule all year I hope to get away with this one and, to be honest, I'm a little worried.
All other Xmas stuff is cancelled, at home in our bubble of 5 on the day.
I've asked my mum to stay in since last Friday and keep checking on her health, so she should be safe for us. We are certainly safe for her.

It would help if we knew what the rules were.....

There are times when I genuinely do not know if I’m breaking the rules or not. I stick to them as best I can but sometimes it just isn’t clear to me.

I don’t mean going into supermarkets or stuff like that but last week I had to get a legal document witnessed and had no idea how to go about it.

Really? I can't say I've every had a problem on that front and the rules seem to change here every week.

That said there are some areas where no clarity has been given, e.g. 'persistent cough'.

Or throw it up a ****ing tree!!! We've got trees in our part of Kent that look like they are growing droopy black fruits.
I thought Kent was known as gods garden /country, maybe it was an anagram, dogs garden /country... [emoji3]

A lot of my friends think this is all a conspiracy and to a certain extent, are a little lax on the rules, like social distancing. I think the fact that the whole of Sussex has been pretty low on the covid scale, means people are lax about it. Most people I know, know of hardly anyone, if anyone, that has had covid which really won't help to get people to stick to rules.

Don’t really blame anyone for breaking the rules. They are so nonsensical it seems madder to stick to them.
Certainly can’t be bothered getting stressed about it.
Having said that, I personally stick to the rules. I have no cause to break them really. I can see friends and family and can got to work. I mask up etc.

I take the opposite view.

If I wish to stick to the rules that's my business. I have by and large stuck to covid rules, with the odd exception of seeing close family. If you stick to the rules yourself it's very difficult to catch it regardless of what other people are doing.

If I was bothered by what other people are doing the only loser in that situation is me. It's a recipe for stress and mental anguish.

Driving is a perfect example of this, people get really angry if other drivers push in at the end of a queue or overtake them. I just let them crack on, it doesn't affect me whatsoever. As long as I'm careful and keep distance from people who aren't safe then I'm unlikely to have an accident.

Yes - really.

Would you know how to get an urgent legal document signed by two independent witnesses? Daughter coming home from uni in a Tier 3 area. Could I go and get her or not? You have to check this stuff pretty carefull.

This is not obvious stuff

Exempt from wearing a mask but NOT exempt from spreading the virus.

If you really can't wear a mask, wear a plastic faceshield or stay at home.

I have been in shops wearing a mask and I've been outnumbered by those not wearing masks. Selfish twats.

Absolutely agree with the OP. It's also taught me that a surprisingly low number of people seem to be able to grasp the concept of delayed gratification.

Huh! Exempt my arse! When the Government rules for exemption include 'If you feel uncomfortable wearing a mask' (not verbatim, but essentially what they say) the whole thing becomes bollox. It should have been a much firmer ruling; if you can't wear a mask, you can't go on public transport or go shopping; end of. Find an alternative.
But an old fashioned socially liberal Tory like Boris and his pals haven't got the backbone to make anything compulsory, with appropriate sanctions for all the little Cummings that believe rues don't apply to them.
This is one area where Boris has well and truly bottled it.

I wrote to the PM about this mask exemption nonsense several months ago suggesting they be made compulsory because:-

1) It is then simple to police

2) Those claiming exemption and refusing to wear masks were still spreading the virus if they had it

Lazy ****er never even bothered to acknowledge, let alone respond to, my email.

(To be fair, the Cabinet Office replied very quickly when I emailed Michael Gove for rules on "non-essential" shops when M&S decided the rules didn't apply to them and kept ALL their non-essential areas open in lockdown v2)
