Nobody goes on strike in the current economic climate unless they have a genuine serious grievance. Wouldn't trust Adam Crozier as far as I could throw him - which isn't very far at all.

Power to the posties

Oh, and to the B&H binmen also in their upcoming struggle

I second this.

Especially the bin men. They are being well shafted.

Why do people get so angry when certain workers stand up to the forces which are driving their wages and terms and conditions down? Jealousy?

I think that people tend to forget that services that they rely on are delivered by people very much like themselves. People they never give a second thought about until it impinges directly on their lives and inconveniences them in some way. Put your bins out in the morning? The bin pixies will have emptied them by the time you get back from work. Leave home in the morning? The post pixies will have left mail on your doorstep by the time you get home from work. Commuting to work on the train? Your train will arrive on time every day because the timetable says so. It would be nice if that's how life worked. But it doesn't.

Its easily forgotten that, in a free market, people will get paid the going rate for the job. All the time we have nearly 3 million unemployed this will force job values down.

In an ever changing market, unions in some public sectors are stuck on preserving the status quo such as lots of paid overtime, final salary pensions etc. They are luddites, exemplified by the fact that the air of reality has already blown through the private sector.

The bottom line is, if you don't like the job, then leave it and find yourself another. The gravy train has already left the station.

A lot of people would love to change their jobs but you said it yourself, there's nearly three million out of work. Where are these alternative jobs ?

This was my point exactly, but perhaps I was being a bit too subtle.

The value of jobs is going down, and there is little alternative, so whats the point in going on strike. Like a spoilt child, you can stamp your feet as hard as you like but the pot is empty.

Clearly said pot is not so empty that many organisations can manage to pay their management nice bonuses even though they could be losing money hand over fist.

Unfortunately that is the shit way that life has always been. As one goes further up the management tree there are less and less people able to do the job, so the rates go up.

If Royal Mail sacked every postman tomorrow its certain that every single position would be filled from the dole queues by people willing to be employed under the new terms. The unions have no bargaining power at present.

If that was true then why haven't they done so ? You obviously think that RM management can just stroll down to their local Job Centre and replace everybody just like that ? What are you on ? Working for the Post Office is not just a question of putting a sack of letters over your shoulder and walking down the road, have you any real knowledge of the job ?

Oh, a lot of people wouldn't want to work for the Post Office as being employed they would loose their Benefits, it's quite simple a lot of people simply couldn't afford to be a Post Person.

So what are these special qualities found in Post Office workers than cannot be replicated elsewhere.

If you were a postman you would be out on strike. 60,000 job losses are looming and those who survive the cull will probably end up as part timers. Their pensions have been affected as now the normal retirement age in RM has been raised to 65. Once the Conservatives get in next year all this action will be pointless because Royal Mail will be privatised.

I certainly hope that last line to be true!

If automation and the recession dictate that 60,000 jobs have to go, how will striking improve things. Welcome to the real world of Woolworths etc.

Modernisation will lead to job losses , that has been understood from the start but the methods that RM wants to implement change will only lead us to a Third World postal service.

OK, I get it now.

Its nothing to do with selfish reasons such as keeping jobs or avoiding having to work harder. Its all for altruistic reasons like trying to preserve the crap Royal Mail service for the great british public.

How can we ever thank you enough.

I would welcome a crap service as we have now rather than what we could end up with. It will end up with no doorstep delivery service to domestic customers , you'll have to pick up your mail from a cabinet at the end of the street or from the sorting office.

The postal service in this country is not only the world's first it's also one of the very best. Still, you know it all obviously, why bother arguing ?

You're starting to sound a bit stupid now. Have you ever recruited and trained anyone for a job?
