Is there a pool of people that get called up whenever an "event" occurs to go and gather outside and form a small crowd? I imagine they are drawn from a similar pool of people to the ones that hang around outside football stadiums on transfer deadline day.

Usually Yanks, Spanish and a gaggle of crazy cat women. They really don't have owt better to do.

I'm having visions of the baby coming out half cast with a strip of hair down the middle and Balotelli on his quad bike riding up at too the hospital demanding to be let in they call the baby Gucci and They then pose for photos and Mario squeezes her left tit.

Maybe, like.

I think of it as similar to an engagement where there is a promise of a future vow, but not fulfilled. During the coronation the monarch takes vows to serve the country and is anointed with oil to seal the promises, before the crowning. Engagements can be broken as Edward did, but the reason the Queen won't abdicate is because she took those vows.
Other monarchies don't look upon it in the same way which is why the Belgian king has just abdicated for his son to take over.
But we're talking about the British monarchy, so whether you personally like it or not Edward VIII was a king as the succession passes immediately on death, i.e. there is never a period without a monarch. One of the reasons why the royal standard never flies at half-mast.

Also if there is ever another Edward he will be Edward IX (at least in England) as the 'eighth' ordinal has been taken.
