So you recognised Elizabeth II as having been Queen in 1952 (despite her not being crowned during that year), but don't count Edward VIII as being King in 1936 because he wasn't crowned.
Apologies for the pedantry, but the history of the Monarchy is something of a specialist subject of mine.

I think of it as similar to an engagement where there is a promise of a future vow, but not fulfilled. During the coronation the monarch takes vows to serve the country and is anointed with oil to seal the promises, before the crowning. Engagements can be broken as Edward did, but the reason the Queen won't abdicate is because she took those vows.
Other monarchies don't look upon it in the same way which is why the Belgian king has just abdicated for his son to take over.

despite being a massive royalist, i find the constant coverage of the process of childbirth slightly odd...i appreciate that this is our future monarch inside that womb, but this is still a case of a woman giving birth...is live coverage really necessary?

This is the biggest problem with the media, & not just in this country. 24 hour news channels are good when it comes to natural disasters or emergencies but when something happens like this, we are saturated with it.

the problem is that if they dont, they fear a ratings drop in case people are actually interested, or rather they have the TV on news just in case something happens. and unless they are Channel 4 who can say they are being alternative, they'll have a deluge of complaints and probably questions in the commons if they didnt.

Is there a pool of people that get called up whenever an "event" occurs to go and gather outside and form a small crowd? I imagine they are drawn from a similar pool of people to the ones that hang around outside football stadiums on transfer deadline day.
