Rounder Records is Closing Down [merged]

What a shame. I used to work just around the corner from there and bought a fair few records back then. I have to admit I haven't been in for quite some time.

I used to love the regular graffiti album art on the outside wall and still HAVE to stop and look at the gig list in the window even though my gig-going days are limited by work and family these days.

I must pop down to say goodbye before it closes.

With the digi generation it's inevitable that all retailers who sell any kind of media are going to suffer.

Gonna be a lot of tongue biting being done as mates bemoan the closing of Rounder on facebook even though they haven't used an independent record shop in years.

Indeed - there is a crushing inevitability to this sort of thing.

Having said that: I haven't been inside for YEARS yet I still do feel it's a shame they're closing down. (Bite!)

Sad news. I used to shop at Rounder but made the difficult move to Resident a few years after they opened as they took to social media a lot quicker and a lot better (which suited me). I personally found the service from Rounder was stuck in the 80s/90s, not very welcoming, but that had it's own charm.
I still have bags with the Chain With No Name list so it's sad to see an old record shop go.

RIP Rounder.

Really sad news, however I only ever use it now for tickets and more than often resident is easier for me to walk to.

I hoped with all the independent record days that a few gems like this would have a bubble life of their own.

Massive shame...

I was always in there in the 80's every Thursday after I got paid spunking away my wages on the latest Divine 12" import or whatever they recommended to me on white label, often I was served by Quentin 'Norman' Cook, wonder what happened to him ? Probably a bus driver or summat now.

Same here.

That brilliant shop did very well out of me in the 80's, with initially dance 12"s under the influence of Rory's Coasters music, and then other dance stuff and Euro imports.

I still have and play the carefully looked after records now, and love it all. Youtube is great for reminding me and seeing that 100'000's of like-minded folk appreciating the same music even now, across Europe & North America.

I never realised about the Norman Cook thing!!!!

Norman Cook worked in there before he was in the Housemartins, he was called Quentin in those days which I think suits him much better, same with Atillas real name Tarquin

What is left now?

Resident
Borderline
Wax Factor
Record Album?
Across The Tracks

There's also Fine Records in George Street, Hove

I'm just wondering if Record Store Day didn't do them any favours ??? It gave the impression that to buy desirable vinyl, you had to queue up from midnight, and pay a wee bit over the odds for what you fancied? Perhaps if it was a case of simply going in and buying what you like, rather than this manufactured 'exclusivety', people might have given the indies more of a go ???

An old college tutor of mine from Bristol was a contemporary of NC at college, and told me he was in a band called 10 000 Quentins, as there were a few of them by that name at that college

In the past few months I have seen two absolute staples of my life disappear. I still have not found a suitable replacement for Harry's breakfast yet. And will I need a plaid shirt and a beard to enter Resident?

I use Resident more than Rounder, very friendly, well laid out and very helpful service, always thought their would be room for two in town. At least you have a good back up on this one. Will be sad to see some tacky gift shop in Residents space and not be able to glance up at the gig board in that little window as you pass...

However the Lincoln beard is a classic
