Hello all,

It is with huge regret and sadness that we have to announce that we are closing down. We will shut our doors at 6pm on Sunday 29th July after 46 years of being a record shop in Brighton Square.

What we have always strived to do is to stock the best range of music at the best prices for our customers – sadly that is not enough for us to stay open.

We are closing because we can't make it add up any more. We are a business that has been decimated by downloads (both legal and illegal), VAT avoidance by the big online retailers, a double dip recession, & the decline of the high street. Our lease has ended and we have nowhere to go.

We would like to give heartfelt thanks to all our customers over the years, and hope that we have managed to provide you with some special and great music throughout this time. That's why we have been here – as place to obtain, hear, find out about, discuss all types of the weird & wonderful world of music, to be a social hub for a musical city, a place where future bands are born, where record labels are started, where local bands can stock their first release, where you can get tickets for gigs, where there's something playing on the shop stereo that might be your new favourite band. Sadly, in 2012, this is just not financially viable.

Our sale continues, with 40% off all DVDs, 30% off all CDs, and 20% off all vinyl.

Tickets- if you have booked tickets with us for collection, please try and collect them before we close. If that's not possible, be assured that we will pass your tickets on to the relevant promoter for collection on the night of the gig.

If you have Sale or Return stock placed with us, you need to come and collect it.
Promoters – if we haven't had the chance to talk to you yet, please pop in or give us a call.

Best wishes,

Steve & all the Rounder staff

Rounder Records - Closing Down

Just read an email from them explaining they cant get the numbers to add up anymore, and will be closing down Sunday July 29th.

This is a massive shame, loved this shop and will be sorely missed.

Rounder Records RIP

Looks like the proposed move did not come off.

And I cannot beging to tell you how disappointed I am to recieve this email. I think I was about 14-15 when I bought my first music in Rounder back in the days when it was a chart shop.

I wish Steve, Johnny and the others all the best.

what a shame.

although wasn't my first choice as a vinyl destination when i was buying jungle/dnb in the 90s, it was still an institution that you relied on to be there when other shops went by the wayside.

sign of the times and very sad.

Was one of the places I used to frequent in the early 00's when I used to buy Vinyl. Sad news, another one gone :(

Sh*t.

Genuinely sorry to hear this. Was hoping the Trafalgar Street thing would happen.

Sorry to hear about that, I frequent resident myself because they tend to carry more of the music I'm interested in and it's closer to home but terrible news to hear about an independent music shop shutting down.

It's nice to actually buy something physical and build a collection, which you can look back on.

Digital downloads do not offer this, that's my opinion.

Its a shame there is no in between, i.e you buy a digital download and actually get a small cd/dvd posted for collection purposes.
I remember Rounder Records. Always packed out in the 90's.

Very sad, almost like a little bit of Brighton culture has died.

This is exactly what I thought when I read the email. Haven't been there for a few years to be honest but from the age of 18 to 25 I went there once a week minimum to buy records and gig tickets.

That's really sad news. Just like many fine independent book & music shops it can no longer compete. Our towns are worse off for their demise.

Gonna be a lot of tongue biting being done as mates bemoan the closing of Rounder on facebook even though they haven't used an independent record shop in years.

Another small part of my past erased forever. Rounder Records was so much more than just a shop. The hours I have spent just perusing the gig list in the window and feeling glad to be in a place like Brighton...

So sad for everybody connected with the store now facing uncertain times. Best wishes to you all. Thanks for the memories and, trite as it may be to say it, thank you for the music.

I can't say I'm surprised, how can any independent record store compete with the internet and modern MP3 technology when even the big guns are struggling.

Very sad, almost like a little bit of Brighton culture has died.

Very sad - on my forays to Brighton for record purchasing activities (and beer imbibing) Rounder Records was usually my final stop after "doing" the record stores around North Laine (what was the name of the one above the Jubilee Market where Komedia is now?).

Sadly a sign of the times, my usual haunts for record purchasing in Tunbridge Wells are all long gone. To add insult to injury, after my very favourite one shut (The Longplayer in Grosvenor Road) they actually pulling the building down!

We all download (most of us I am sure) and we have access to far more music than we could have imagined before via Spotify and the like but you couldn't beat going into the Longplayer and ending up with several albums that you had either heard in there or they had suggested. No family and high disposable income at the time also helped of course!

Indeed. My missus was never really into music but recently I've took her in to Resident once every couple of weeks and we pick up a few bits. She would NEVER do this online and quite often we'll pick up whatever is playing in store. Still can't beat getting home and opening the albums and reading sleeve notes.

Very sad to hear that. Any record shop shutting is sad, and de-personalises the joy of discovering new music. Hope there is plenty more life in those that are left.
