I watched a feature on Ronaldo the other day and the analyst (his name escapes me) was saying how many experts get a little precious about past greats such as Best, Pele etc. The expert was argueing that Ronaldo has produced tricks, skills and goals better than the 'greats' already and wanted the footballing world to recognise it.

I thought he had quite a good point - if you put together a compilation of Peles best tricks and goals would they be as impressive as a Ronaldo montage? (as I am too young to fully appreciate Pele what do others think?)

I think it is a mistake to compare players like this in the first place as the game evolves. Ronaldo would piss all over Best, but would he if they had come through at the same time? Who knows.

I never knew Ronnie was involved with the credit crunch too. Fair play to him then.

The reason why you will see fewer of Peles best tricks and goals is that there was not wall to wall TV coverage in the period he played in. Having said that, he did score 1000 goals in a career, which is phenominal (until Doug Loft does the same of course)

what about the children!.

Personally I couldn't possibly comment as I've not seen every other player, in the world, play.
unless by 'world' you mean premiership, having been suckered into fantasy-land by Sky, then yes he probably is, this season.

Which I remember the FA in Brazil confirming included FRIENDLY matches and TESTIMONIALS...

You could turn it round and say he never played in a top European league where goals would have been harded to come by.

The problem with a poll like this is that very few Man U-haters could bring themselves to say 'Yes', regardless of how good he is.

I'm sure that if he played for another team, there would be far more 'Yes' votes.

It's all so boringly predictable.

There are several different issues here that have caused me some consternation:
Is the Premiership the best league - my view no it can be brilliant but it can also be drose Wigan vs Fulham is not a great advert is it. The Premiership is the richest and most marketed league in the world but it is no differnt to most other in that it is a closed shop between 3 maybe 4 teams.

Ronaldo better than Pele my heart says no but we will never know the game is comletely different a probably uncomparable but for me Pele could dance around the crunching tackles Ronadlo takes a dive, therefore Pele wins.

Is Ronaldo the best player in the world, he's up there but is he better than Messi or Kaka, maybe one week but not the next, he is surrounded by talent which makes it easier put him in our midfield and we will see how good he really is.

At the end of the day I hate the twat but I can't deny he is a talent but the worlds best, this season maybe next season probably not.

How someone can claim Maldini's over-rated on a thread about Ronaldo shows people are using vast levels of irony. Maldini has been one of the top players in the world for two decades, how can he possibly be over-rated. Ronaldo is very, very good but of the players you can compare him to i'd say he's not as good Messi or Kaka(although he's not had a great season due to injury). I also cant say i enjoy watching him play, his stroppiness and bad sportsmanship/cheating make that difficult

Or you could say that he won THREE World Cup winners medals

people are so blinkered. its the same with every league in Europe

Spain: Barca or real madrid, valencia not close enough
Italy: Inter with ease
Germany: Bayern
Holland i think AZ won it + Ajax, Fayenoord.
France: Lyon

EVERY LEAGUE is dominated but 3 or 4 teams. WE ARE LUCKY that 4 teams are even threatning the league. Germany, france and italy are ONE TEAM leagues at the moment and spain is nowhere near as close as people think.

There's less of a points difference between 1st and 2nd place in France and Italy than there is in the premiership

Yes but only lyon win the french league..........And italian league is a 2 horse race and has only just become that cos inter had a slip in form otherwise it would of been sewn up by now.

I have never seen Maldini give an outstanding performance for club or country. What else should I base it on?

Well i'm assuming you haven't watched many Italy or Milan games, so i'd probably have seen someone play a lot before saying they're over-rated.

I remeber watching him get raped in the world cup by one Russian winger (can't remember his name) and then in the second half get absolutely cornholed by Kanchelskis.

Other than that he hasn't done anything of real note in the 40 odd games I've seen him play.

Is it worth arguing about?

We all have our opinions - some based on what they actually see, others on their prejudices, and we can all come up with facts and figures to suit those prejudices.

I can't say if he is the best player in the world or not. He is certainly the best player I have seen this season, but I don't see enough of others in other countries to make a proper judgement.

And to compare him with past 'greats' is simply futile. They were great in their time. Football is so different today.
