Rock and Chips

Basil Fawlty

Don't Mention The War
For those who appreciated the clever references to Only Fools.

1. Albie Littlewood

He was the kid who cheated on Del by going out with his bird, though at one point he was Dels “Bestest Friend in the entire world”. Albie would later die taking a short cut across the train track
2. Roy Slater
Slater turned up with some type of muck on him as if he had been made to “walk the plank” while playing pirates with Del and the lads. This was referenced in the episode Del bumps into Slater in the police station in the episode
3. Clayton
Clayton was seen many years later in the Danger UXD Episode when Del and Albert are outside the flats with the dolls dressed up in Joan’s Clothing.
4. Joan’s Clothing
The same outfit worn by Joan in Rock & Chips was also still in the wardrobe in the Danger UXD Episode and used to dress the dolls up
5. Aunt Renee
Clearly she was in the know as Joan’s confidante and would later feature in The Frogs Legacy episode where she reveals the information on Fred Robdal
6. The Flat
It was great to see them moving in to Nelson Mandela House though clearly the name Nelson Mandela House and Zimbabwe House would be added thereafter
7. Jelly Kelly
Jelly Kelly was the guy who died while blowing up one safe too many. He was holding the dynamite when Freddy sat on the detonator. As Del commented in a later episode “he would be no good in a Mexican wave”
8. Joans Work at the Council
This played an important part in how Joan helped out Freddy. It was referenced in The Frogs Legacy where she was able to get her hands on certain files for him
9. Balcony moment
The way Rodney was held on the Balcony was repeated by Del boy years later when Damien was born and held for a few moments while talking to his Mum Joan
10. Jolly Boys Outing
It was referenced in Only Fools as an annual outing and in true 1960s style they did just that. This served to be the moment when a photo of this event provided Rodney the proof in the last only fools episode that he was the son of Freddy Robdal

Spot on, exactly what my references were all about. This was indeed a superb DRAMA, look at that word carefully and digest people. Because I for one, can't wait for a series to be made. There is so much to go on, it is untrue. And who wants to see Marlene Stillettos in the Gutter on the sloping roof? I do!!!!

Definitely not a comedy but a good period piece.

..now cannot compete on OFAH trivia..

Did anyone else notice at the start when Del Boy and the Gang saw Freddie the frog at the zebra crossing. the distance shot of the boys through Freddie's windscreen you could clearly see the mike boom over the kids head...

...now where's my award for most dullest post?

It was everything a prequel should be. I thought Lyndhurst played the part of Freddie to perfection.

Worked alright as a prequel. The coach they used on the day out to Margate is a vintage vehicle belonging to a company based near Chelmsford.

Worked alright as a prequel. The coach they used on the day out to Margate , a Bedford SB Duple , is a vintage vehicle belonging to Lodge's Coaches which is based near Chelmsford.

Did they have bar billiards in 1960? Just a thought.

Watched this on demand, and thought it was top top stuff. Lyndhurst was great, as was the chap from the Inbetweeners.

THink the BBC messed up with the way billed it as a lot of people will have tuned expecting big laughs. But it was clever, nice and sentimental. I enjoyed it.

Living In a Box
Watching it now and almost spat out my wine when the block read out the names of the women for the pregnancy test "I'm looking for minge".

I said earlier it was rubbish but thanks to others had digi-boxed it and it is very good.

We too watched it, last night, and although I enjoyed it I did have one large issue.

For a prequel based on the back story of a much loved programme. It didn't half crow-bar in the story.
This being a story that I'd say well over 90% of the audience know anyway.

How many times were we told who Freddie was and where he'd been, at least 4.
But to then repeat the episode in a 2 minute 'dream/voice over' sequence, for those so stoopid they hadn't kept up, was insulting.

Didn't watch it as OFAH is turd and I can only imagine this prequel would be the noxious gas that escapes before the big smelly dog egg that was OFAH

I am fairly certain The John Selden in Salvington Rd Worthing did. I worked there part time in 1961 and so did a chap who was either the Sussex or Area Bar Billiards Champion so it must have been in operation prior to 1961 for him to be a champion.

the only thing i picked up on was the fact that in OFAH, del says on more than one occasion that his dad left on his 16th birthday when rodney was a toddler.
it seems to me that del is at least 16 in the prequel...yet rodders has ony just been born

As someone who loves Only Fools, and who only saw Rock and Chips today, I can safely say it was brilliant. I thought the way it was filmed was a bit disappointing, they could have used old fashioned filters on the cameras to make it feel a bit more authentic, but that's an utter irrelevance and just me being pedantic. The actual programme was nothing short of brilliant, all the references were brilliant and I think you'd need to have an obsessive knowledge of OF&H to fully appreciate all of what was going on.

Can someone jog my memory of Raymond though? Seriously, it's getting annoying. I'm trying to remember where I remember him from, in the OF&H series. Does he work with Boycie at Boyce Autos? Clearly, my obsessive knowledge of OF&H has a couple of gaps. :lolol:
