Is it just me, or have we lost a lot of very good characters over the last couple of seasons.

Gordon Greer, Leo, Andrew Crofts, Bobby Z, Calde, Steve Sidwell, Uwe, Liam, David Stockdale and, of course, without naming names, there may be more.

(I think the decisions were right in every case) Maybe it's reflective that we have only been recruiting good characters over the last few seasons ?

The Andone speculation has been a welcome distraction, but still no news of Krul and Maenpaa....

That doent mean that they will stay as I am sure Krul especially will want guarnteed first team football, and will receive offers.

Of course but then begs the question- why did he sign for us last year if that’s the case. All prem league clubs have # 2 and #3 keepers in the same boat. Someone has to do it and many are happy to.

Is that just the life of a loanee, especially a guy who has become a career reserve? That whenever the season ends, the kids do have a "goodbye party" as they simply do not know where they are heading for next school year.

Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if he wants a bit of stability and if that means lower wages but back in his homeland to bring his family up, then that's where he's instructing his agent to look.

Krul isn't on loan, we converted the loan and signed him permenantly just before the Newcastle game back in September.

Odd because only a week ago (at the same time as the “leaving party”.

Krul gave an interview to the Argus where he said that he was expecting talks to start soon, had heard “positive noises” and was very upbeat about the club.

I'm not sure why a few people seem convinced that Tim Krul is interested in a move "home".

He has been playing in England since he was 18, and apart from a couple of loan spells (and international football) he has not played much football in Holland at all, infact he's played more games in the Scottish Premier League than he has in the Dutch Eredivisie. His wife is from Newcastle and I am fairly certain his daughter would have been born in England, maybe like Steve Harper's wife they've not been able to settle in the south and want a move back to Newcastle while Tim considers his options on another year here or not.

It was more of a reference to his career than his current situation. He is someone who has got used to being unsure where he plays next season, which is why I suggest he may have got used to having an end of season party for the kids each year, regardless of his expectations, but just because he knows things change quickly. Treat it as a "goodbye" at the end of each season, and then just see what happens.

David Preece is of the opinion that all 2nd choice goalies are itching for a start while the 3rd choice keepers know and are happy in their place.

I've long thought that being the kicker/punter in the NFL is one of the cushiest sports jobs around but third choice keeper in the premier league has to be at the very top of the list. Great money to train a couple of hours a day with and against some of the best players in the world, picking up a very decent pay packet all while having absolutely no pressure. Keepers can have a really long career so spending a couple of years of it as a third choice in the premier league isn't a big problem. They can still have a long career and play plenty of games in the lower leagues before/after it.

If only I'd been a tiny bit better at it in my youth...

Re: third keeper iirc when giving Casper another year Hughton said that in many ways third keeper us it's own specialised position. Of course it was probably just a nice way of saying he's not good enough but he helps out in training doesn't cause any bother and if it looks line he'll end up playing more than half a game we'll be getting an emergency loan in.

He's good enough to be the Youth goalkeeping coach.

Younger than 18, as he saved two penalties when our youth team got knocked out of the FA cup on penalties.

You are correct, he had just turned 17 when he signed for Newcastle in July 2005. We played that game against Newcastle the following March a month before Krul turned 18. Think we had the likes of Joel Lynch and Joe Gatting playing for us.

I would think the situation is different now as he possibly thought that he would get the No 1 spot at some time but now knows that he wont and being a year older must look to his future and I believe that if a promoted club or one expected to be near the top of The Championship next season came in for him he would have to seriously consider the offer. I would think that Maenpaa falls into the happy to be no 2 or 3 bracket.
