This is sure to be a hot potatoe! :p

But who out of the players we currently have would you keep and who would go?

Now, firstly Mayo? 2 months ago I would have said 100% he must go, but now I have a little bit of a reluctancy? We have Rents who can cover but is he upto 46 league 1 (or if I am very optimistic Championship) level? Is Mayo?

Then there is Hart? Getting slower and has lost that speed but still gives 100%.

Butters? Still good to coach the kids and can come on and cover?

If we were just outside the relegation zone it's an easy one isn't it, they all must go. But know we are showing promise?

One thing in my opinion is we MUST buy a midfielder in the summer, Racon, O'Callaghan have proven that.

Who goes you decide (in a Geordie accent) ?

I can't remember who is out of contract this year. Kuipers? El-Abd?
Has anyone got a list somewhere?

Mayo - one more year
Hart - No more. Gives 100% every time but not as effective anymore
Butters - one more year for the above reasons on the condition he chases back and plays to the whistle every time there is a hint of off side as oppose to sticking his arm in the air!

All IMO of course.

You have to remember that every player you want to keep on takes a slice out of the 'playing budget' and may actually block a new fresher player from being added to the squad.

The Harts, Mayos and Butters have been great servants but all demand decent wages which Wilkins might feel could be spent on new targets.

You've no idea what any of those players are paid, or what they might be prepared to accept for a future deal.

Agreed and as our scouts seem to be doing well of late, I guess the above is the answer.

Yup I wouldn't be sorry to see Mayo, Hart or Butters go. As they're all senior players and have been at the club for some time they are probably among our most highly paid players. Letting these three go would free up space for new signings. The most important thing to consider is whether we'd find anything better in the transfer market - but I think in all 3 cases the answer is yes, and quite easily. It's not like we're trying to sign a 30-goals-a-season striker, we just need some reliable talent to bolster the squad and get rid of those players who, despite being great in their time, are clearly past it.

It is very likely that they are on decent money, probably in the higher bracket of the squads wages, it is true however that we dont know what they might be willing to accept.

The fact still remains that Wilkins might wish to use the money to strengthen the squad with younger players of a similar or greater quality.

I am not too sure what is gained by keeping players that have no real added value to the squad.

You either believe they will be a benefit to the progress of the Team or you get others players in.

I've no argument with that at all, just pointing out that people on here like to speculate about players' wages with NO knowledge of the figures involved.

As for players being on big salaries purely based on time served - it doesn't always work like that.

I believe Kuipers took a big cut to secure an additional year?

Out of memory:

Kerry Mayo
Adam Hinshelwood
Adam El-Abd
Gary Hart
John Sullivan
Guy Butters
Paul Reid
Michel Kuipers
Sam Rents
Tommy Fraser
Doug Loft
Scott Chamberlain
Wes Fogden
Shane Mcfaul
Sam Gargan
Sonny Cobbs
Lloyd Skinner
Chris Winterton

Maybe Tommy Elphick as well but I'm not 100% sure.

We need squad players to cover for injuries and suspensions. Not every player can be first choice. Those who can play in more than one position are particularly useful.

I dont know about Kuipers, but you must concede that you too are speculating on a players wage with NO knowledge of the figures involved !!

The fact is that many on here do have an idea of some players wages, to differing degrees.

But it remains that each player retained is impacting on any future signings.

Agreed, however it could be argued that it would be beneficial to have cover from a new signing that has potential to actually become first choice.

Easier said than done, but that should be the aim.

If we cannot find younger players with more potential then fine stick with the aging players we have.

Kerry Mayo would put him either on a rolling or an very short-term and activiely look for a left back or even 2.
Adam Hinshelwood - one more year ONLY
Adam El-Abd - yes
Gary Hart - his time has gone
John Sullivan - if Wilkins won't risk him there's no point
Guy Butters - tough.... one more year if he's not costing us too much
Paul Reid - also tough... hasn't really broken back in team... if high wages
Michel Kuipers - yes
Sam Rents - three months ago I would have said yes... looks like
Tommy Fraser - yes
Doug Loft - yes - potential is there
Scott Chamberlain - yes
Wes Fogden - not sure
Shane Mcfaul - not sure
Sam Gargan - not sure
Sonny Cobbs -
Lloyd Skinner - one more year
Chris Winterton -

Maybe Tommy Elphick as well but I'm not 100% sure - if we don't sign him it's Wilkins we should be  to!!!

Just out of interest, have you seen a lot of Cobbs, Winterton and Sullivan in Turkey?

And on what basis do you conclude that Wilkins WON'T risk Sullivan. We would only find that out of he actually was in a position where he had to make that choice.
