I'm ALMOST certain Elphick signed an extension at some point this season?

I listened to Barry Lloyd's podcast on the Anus website a few weeks back when he was talking about securing players that we got in the transfer window etc. I understand Lloyd is no particular authority on the transfer policy for this summer, but I get the real feeling listening to it that the club are preparing a clear-out.

I wouldn't be surprised that those that have not been regulars this season will not get new contracts (by regulars, I mean more than say 12 games).

I also think that we will try our hardest to get the loan players here permanently, certainly Racon, Richards and Westlake. If we offer three year deals, there's the Falmer carrot to dangle in front of new signings this summer.

I think it would be good for us to have a clear-out frankly. It's also worth remembering that Wilkins prefers there to be a higher turnover of players too, so if he can get his way without the bloody chairman interfering in who stays and who goes, don't be surprised to see most of the out of contract players leave.

We can only really decide what's best once the players themselves (or, at the very least, their agents) have started whinging in the media.

Wake up Naylor!

Wilkins will have to wait to see who DK thinks should stay ...................

Would rather Reid than Hart or Mayo.

Reid seems to play well enough at either full back spot or anywhere in midfield.

Not based on this season he doesn't. When he got back into the team, before this latest injury he was abysmal. Never up with the pace of the game and looked hurried and ill at ease on the ball. Whether that was a lack of match fitness, or a fear of getting crocked again, or simply no form I don't know, but I'd say he did very little to justify a contract in front of Mayo, especially given his recent performances.

In the case of both Reid and Hinshelwood I would give short term deals to prove fitness. No more than that. Same probably with Hart.

I would offer contracts to:

2+ Years
El Abd
Kuipers
Fraser

1 year
Mayo
Butters
Loft

I don't know enough about the youth teamers/reserves to comment, although I probably wouldn't bother to retain Rents as he just hasn't looked up to it whenever he has played.

Not too sure about shouts for contract extensions, whenever a youngster with promise comes along.

Elphick undoubtedly looks a good prospect, but what advantage would the club have offering an extension to his contract that already runs until the end of season 08/09.

He isnt on a bosman at the end of that term and I would think it would be better to re-negotiate if next season he shows the same performance levels.

If he is outstanding and a bigger club comes along, then they would still have to get Brighton's blessing for him to move and of course a transfer fee.

It can be a risk giving longer deals with favourable terms to youngsters, because sometimes it can fall the other way and they do not progress.

Let him work hard and continue his form next season which will allow him to earn a longer deal.

That is fair comment, however I would like to think it was down to not being fit and finding his feet again.

Keep:
El Abd
Fraser

Not sure:
Kuipers (get rid if we by some miracle went up, borderline if we stayed down)
Hinshelwood

Get rid:
Hart
Mayo
Butters
Loft
Reid

Can't really speak for the others, mainly youth team players, as I haven't seen enough of them to comment.

El-Abd certainly deserves a long term contract. He's proved he's capable of playing well in a number of different positions. His versatility is a huge asset to the squad.

Kuipers is a class keeper on his day. 2 years.

Sam Rents and Tommy Fraser would get another year. Both have shown signs of promise and Rents, especially, has the potential to develop into a great little player.

Guy Butters can still do a job for us if needed, someone suggested a player/coach role - sounds good to me.

I'd give Hinshelwood another year to prove his fitness, whilst there is no doubting his ability, he sadly isn't much use to us on the physio table. Similarly, Paul Reid should get another year.

I'd reluctantly release Mayo and Hart. Both experienced heads who never fail to give 100% but despite some encouraging performances of late, they're getting on now, we need to move on.

Doug Loft should be released. Bit of a headless chicken. Deadwood.

As for Chamberlain, Fogden, McFaul, Gargan, Cobbs, Winterton and Skinner, I have no idea.

Abort, retry, fail
I have a feeling Butters will not stay whatever happens. There has been interest in him and he will be wanting to play, rather than kick his heels. There are only so many blows you can take with reserve matches being called off all the time and lack of match practice. I would not want to be a bench warmer at 38 if I felt I could still play on.

I was always of the opinion of getting rid of Mayo, but I have my (slight) doubts now. If he is happy to play second fiddle, then he could be valuable back up if we are not able to sign Richards on long term.

I'd like to see Elphick lead us out at Falmer now. So i'd dangle the offer of a carrot sorry contracting 2010/11 infront of him.

The carrot should be for Elphick himself working hard and continue developing so that he might lead out the Team at a later stage.

The contract is irrelevant as I promise you if a much bigger club came a calling, as some seem to be suggesting, no Falmer Stadium will keep him here.

He'd be off like a shot.

A player on a longer contract is worth more than someone on a short contract. I don't see Elphick as being a carrot/stick type player. He clearly plays because he loves the game and I really can't imagine him giving anything less than 100%. If you reward those that work hard at their game and show loyalty, then the benefits are immeasurable. One spin off scenario is that this sort of thing will continue to attract young players to the club/academy
