Religious intolerance and bigotry

In London village.
Certain, I remember when I was living in the Bible Belt people complaining about it. Frankly it's one of the few sound ideas found in the American education system.

The Constitution is intended to avoid the state dictating any religion to the people - one of the reasons why the re-writing of the Oath of Allegience by ring-wing nuts in the 1950s is still considered illegitimate by more intelligent Yanks.

Could you post some example of Atheists enforcing their beliefs on others on NSC please.

Cheers.

Here you go:

Whilst perhaps no-one is forcing anything, the general NSC "correct" mob are in no mind to listen to the concept that there are positivs in religion.

To clarify a couple of issues. I am agnostic bordering on atheist but my issue with the father , who surprisingly enough was not a toothless redneck , who was seemingly indoctrinating his young daughter. I would have found Muslims , Jews , Hindus etc preaching hatred of another creed equally objectionable. Didn't know Juan Albion was particularly religious and certainly didn't mean any offence (pretty sure he didn't take any?). As a fellow Americas based Albion fan I frequently enjoy his company on this board while everyone at home is asleep! On balance maybe I was a touch bigoted about the bigotry!

Finally Switzerland is the next "village" if you can term it that to the place that I live - Fruit Cove - in NE Florida. Hence I live just outside Switzerland.

Anyway three points on Friday night would be nice eh?!!

I agree. As a relapsed Catholic I have little time for any religion and will defend my beliefs if asked, pretty much the same way that Juan defends his. I will however acknowledge that from personal experience that religion has given a better life to many. Of course on the down side the repression that is inflicted by people in the name of religion is the real problem not religion itself.

Cos they're a bunch of complete nutjobs running a cult based purely on making a few people at the very top of it very rich?

Is the correct answer. The plain truth is that Scientology is a cult and not a religion. It uses religion as a vehicle for it's ridiculous ends and it is astonishing that people believe in it.

Having said that it's fair to say that many are amazed that anybody believes in any form of 'Higher Authority' without any tangible proof of it's existence.

Which is different to the Catholic church in what way?

Like it or loathe it Catholicism is probably the world's most-practiced religion, and therefore can't be simply dismissed as a few people conning a few more into parting with some cash as is the case with Scientology.

That's not of course denying that the Catholic Church has huge issues; right from the Crusades to the sexual abuse of children by priests and the refusal to try and stop AIDS by supporting the use of condoms it hasn't exactly covered itself in glory throughout history.

So it's just a question of scale?

I think the difference is that Catholics (including those right at the top) do genuinely believe in their faith and most live their lives according to what the faith considers the correct way to do so.

Whereas I strongly suspect that the people running the 'Church' of Scientology know it's bollocks and are just in it to cream as much cash as they can from idiots like Tom Cruise. Hence why I referred to it as a cult, rather than Catholicism (and Islam, Protestantism, Judaism and so on) as a religion.

Should also be mentioned that Scientologists are fiercely homophobic. There have have been rumours that high profile Scientologist John Travolta bats for the other side and his marriage is a sham.

In fairness, quite a lot of Christians are fiercely homophobic :lolol:
