For gods sake will some people on here ditch their PC crusade and get right off their holier than thou soapbox because ive never heard such fvcking nonsense in my life.
Its a fvcking footbal match for gods sake where chanting is made about any stigma attached to that team and its being going on for years and years. Its sound like you pc types would just love it if everyone sat around singing "BRIGHTON BRIGHTON RA RA RA" whilst clapping hands and thinking how nice we are and all those other nasty football fans are swearing and stuff....... Fvckoff and spout your nonsense elsewhere and grow up if u honestly think that by making those chants that you have an honest belief that we really believe what is being sung.
So was everyone at Chesterfield a fraudster or tax cheat...NO
So was everyone in Liverpool on the dole or a burgler...NO
So is everyone at Cardiff a sheepshagger....YES...........I mean NO

But i bet your life all you holier than thou types sung and made comments about that.

It always seems funny to me how the double standards come out in debates like this.

In view of the amount of PC types out there i expect a barrage of abuse firing back at me. Here is a list of expected comments...

Racsist, Biggot, Little Englander, Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah.

I have it on good authority that in the last Derbyshire census EVERY SINGLE person in Chesterfield had been convicted on either tax evasion or other fraud charges. Always in brown envelopes.

In which case i will withdraw my comment regarding Chesterfield not being cheats ...........and let the record show them all to be nothing but scheming shiesters.

In a round about way you raise a very good point. As most chants are an attempt at humour and all humour tends to have a victim(s), by definition most chants will have a victim. I think as individuals we have to decide where to join the line.

Personally I think most things football related are fair game (Hillsborough and similar aside) and us and Cardiff probably lost the right to moan too much when we started singing one nil to the shirtlifters/sheepshaggers.

Specifically about last night, the July bombings are still fresh in the mind. Forget being PC, it is in poor taste, imho.

I assume that if we do get into trouble, the people who did the chants will come forward and take the blame ?

If any of you on here did actually sing any of those racist chants about Luton's Asian population, you might just as well have turned up with a sign hanging round your neck saying: "I don't get to see many coloureds in my life, because I'm a f***ing INBRED"

Whatever way you advertise yourselves, you remain a total embarrassment to all decent Albion fans, so cop yourselves on.

The great thing about Luton this time is that the chants were less loud than two years ago and I saw a lot more embarrassment on other fans' faces than two years ago.

The waters are muddied because some people who do not consider themselves as racists, just for a laugh, join in with the "town full of Paki's" and "small town in Delhi" type chants that surface now and then at football. I'm not saying that joining in, sheep-like, with those chants makes that person a racist. But it just adds fuel to the fire, and bolsters the genuine knuckle-scraping racists within the crowd who love nothing more than to belittle ethnic minorities as part of their afternoons entertainment.

I'm not trying to come across as "holier than thou", but its a line I just do not cross at a football match. Everyone has their own reasons for joining in with the "Paki" and "Delhi" chants. Most probably do it for a laugh, some will be genuine bigots. I'm not comfortable with it, never have been, never will be, and will never join in with it. And I think it gives a very poor impression of Albion fans. That doesn't make us unique - racist chanting probably happens with most clubs. But it makes us look as crap as the rest, which ain't good.

The best post on this thread two years ago, thanks Easy:

I didn't go to Luton last night, but I did the last time we played there.

What I observed then - at very close quarters - was that there was a small number of Albion followers who were among the first to start the racist chanting. I wasn't surprised when it happened, because I'd stood behind them in a pre-match refreshment queue, listening to their private conversation about how "disgusted" they were that Luton was a town full of Asians. Ten minutes of real racist shite I could have done without, while queuing for a cup of tea.

Make no mistake - we do have some very nasty racists in our numbers and games like Luton seem to bring them out.

When they start chanting, it's certainly NOT harmless banter, nor is it intended to be.

I understand your point Big G, and I agree with you that singing those songs for a laugh does not make you a racist. You are out at the footy and its all just a bit of fun right, a wind up. Where's the harm? Well for me, the danger is that by making racist chants acceptable because some find it amusing, we are taking a step closer (small as it may be) to endorsing racist attitudes. "But I'm no racist!" I hear you cry. That may be so, but the kids that bullied me at school whilst calling me a paki probably weren't really racists either (just as I do not have any Pakistani heritage). However they thought it acceptable and funny because sections of society were giving them that message. If 12 year old kids had been standing next to you at the Luton game and witnessed you finding racist chanting funny, I'm sure the message they would take from that is that it is acceptable to belittle certain ethnic groups. It is very naive to think that public displays of racist chanting at a football match have no knock on effect in the wider community, no matter how innocent they seem to you.

I remember reading a piece by Rod Liddle (Millwall fan) about chants due for an airing at the Millwall v Iran friendly scheduled last summer before it was called off after the London bombings.

Two those cherubic Lions fans had ready were 'Get your face out for the lads', and 'You're shi-ite and you know you are'.

Is that funny or racist? Or both? Or neither?

Both smart and funny - the first one quite a witty play on western/eastern cultural differences, and the second a nice pun - those boneheads chanting on Wednesday wouldn't have a clue what a Shi'ite was, if only they had that many braincells.
