It's not damaging to be asking questions about a cause we all support ... it's a sign that people want the charity to flourish.

I agree and I don't.

Agreed - the same problem comes up again - a load of ****s on the sidelines telling anyone who'll listen exactly how it should be done while doing the square route of **** ALL themselves.

He was involved in the first one, they raised thousands.

This is bloody ridiculous, I'm sorry but reading through these people criticising about the amount of money raised is appalling!

ANYTHING, whether it's £1 or £1000 is a going to the same cause and will continue to do so, so get off your high horse and shut the f c u k up!

I'm buzzing about playing tonight! Can't wait

Are you saying that £65 raised per player is acceptable? Because you're looking forward to playing?

I think what people are trying to say is, therein lies the problem.

People would also do well to remember that a lot of the people who attend the match, pay to get in, buy raffle tickets, donate money are doing so because they know the people playing. For example, I have a few people coming along who have not sponsored on the official page, but will contribute a fair amount other ways.

He was involved in the first one, they raised thousands.

In the first year of ANY event, there is likely to be more interest/money raised.

Despite this, the REMF squad has raised more than that in years subsequent, and in the year where the places were auctioned off there was actually a lot less raised.

Carry on.....

The big question is this: how many pages will this topic reach by the time the match kicks off tonight?

Absolutely. Why should the REMF be immune to criticism?

Why haven't you set a charity up over in Germany? I don't think I'm being harsh when I say that you come across as someone who thinks they know exactly how a charity should be run.

No I have not said I know how to run a charity. I said I know a bit about running and how this links in charities. A former school friend's brother died some time ago and his family and running club set up a memorial race in Sussex which still runs to this day. I was also a good friend of one of the Sussex Beacon directors who was also the race secretary for the Brighton half marathon. And I have thought about organising something myself and one day I will.

The REMF is run by a team of about four. In their spare time.

It has raised £125,000 plus for charity. That is £125,000 plus going to help good causes and junior football clubs in memory of Robert. And THAT is something everyone involved should be very proud of.

But please, feel free to criticise. Presumably you will all be PM'ing your offers of help over the next few days, or offering to get involved to people in person at tonight's match.

I'm not sure that anyone is actively criticising Tony, Al or Gareth for what they do and have done, and if they are then that's a shame. I think it's more that there are 15 or 16 players involved in the squad that have raised essentially nothing, Mendoza excluded. £64 each on average is a rubbish effort, and I'm sure that some will have raised more than others so there could be players that haven't actually contributed anything apart from their match fee (which someone else may have paid for them anyway!) But you know, they're buzzing about playing...

Everyone knows it's a great charity and I'm sure most support it, however it seems to me that whenever anyone either tries to offer some advice to try to enhance it or have the affront to make a tiny, weeny criticism, they get told to google off or are greeted with a flounce.

I dunno, maybe that's just the way I see it:shrug:

The annual REMF football match is the event that has given the charity its momentum and kept REMF in the public eye year on year. It works, because it's a good night out for supporters and the players. The two teams are always reasonably matched - and that could be compromised if "make a big donation and you get to play" became the watchword (although that would be a fine approach, if the game was a one-off charity event). The game itself isn't the main way that REMF raises funds. It's the catalyst for lots of other fund-raising that goes on throughout the year. Much of that fund-raising is relatively small-scale, but it draws Albion fans together in a common cause and contributes to the sense of community that we feel, because we are Albion supporters.

REMF is a good thing. The few hundred who turn up this evening will have a good time. And we'll be back next year.

It IS however damaging to snipe from the sidelines and make some pretty crass comments without lifting a finger to help.

I love the idea of a 10k or something for the REMF, but it WOULD take a lot of organising.

Uncle Spierlberg has worked wonders upping the profile of the REMF marathon team in the last few years. As someone who ran it for the REMF last year, Uncle Spierlberg's enthusiasm and support was hugely valuable.

Organising an entire race would be a big undertaking. Recruiting race marshalls, sorting out road issues with police etc, not to mention all the admin.

Might be a good project for someone new to take on alongside the existing team. I imagine, the REMF, as ever, is open to offers.

Great. When "one day" comes, come back here and tell everyone how it's done.
