Loved punk music then still think it's worth a listern now it was a shot in the arm that the music industry needed and the Pistols were the best although I was never lucky enough to see them Live but not many actually did, my current faverate although they keep protesting they are not Punk is the Idles

There was a rumour that in the summer of 1977, when anti-punk hysteria was at a high, the Pistols played at the Embassy Cinema on Western Road under the Name of The Spots (Sex Pistols On Tour). Anyone else aware of this or, if true, actually went to it.

It didn't happen as far as I am aware. I remember the younger lad in The Depressions cycling round Brighton from venue to venue one evening because he'd heard this rumour.

The Jam did play the Embassy cinema. 'Punky Steve' off his tits and causing trouble outside as we queued to get in....<sigh>

Sometime in 1977 my mate's sister asked us if we wanted to go and see a band at BHASVIC. That band was local outfit The Depressions.

Saw them many times. Old rockers, really.

Just looked up Dave Barnard to see how he is, and apparently he reformed Tonge a couple of years ago.

The article is a bit weird - I practically live in the Hungry Years at one point as monty uk can confirm, and I don't everremember gigs there. Downstairs in the Buccaneer, different story.

Indeed. There were 3 or more gigs a week on in Brighton in the summer of 77, at the Alhambra, Basement or Vault. Great days.

My biggest single regret in all of punk? Not lugging a camera around. Never crossed my mind. Never crossed just about ANYBODY's mind. All those - in retrospect - glorious chances to document the time of our lives not taken up. Gah!

Did you?! Upstairs? Crikey! You live and learn....

The male singer, John, was a bit of a 'movie star' wasn't he

I think Dave is the only one still alive, I'd heard all the others had died - I definitely know Oz has.

I saw them many times too, including seeing them in Manchester. Took them aback to see someone from Brighton in the audience. Oz was a great bloke; he sat in on a Brighton Riot Squad rehearsal once when our drummer hadn't turned up and laid down a vicious beat.

If only smart phones had been around 40 odd years ago. Mind you the video would have been very shaky giving the bouncing around

Ha! Used to be a punk venue in Croydon called the Greyhound. Gigs were in an upstairs room. Notices abounded stating that Pogoing (not that anybody worth their salt ever really did that anyway outside of the pages of the Daily Mirror) Was Strictly Forbidden By Order Of The Management lest we all fall through the floor
