I think the word you're looking for is inextricably. And nobody's saying young fans have 'introduced drinking' - that's a wild leap in your argument. Personally, I think far more people drink heavily now at the football than used to - largely because alcohol is so much more easily available en masse.

We were having a discussion about the behaviour of our young fans and their drinking. You're response was something like "it's amazing to think people used to go to the football to watch the match and not to get drunk". You understand how that sounds like you're blaming young fans for introducing heavy drinking right? Given we were discussing the difference between older and younger supporters, how else can it be interpreted?

Whether or not drinking has increased recently I can't say. But if it has I don't see younger fans drinking more than anyone else. I'll also say everybody is far better behaved these days. So even if it has increased, so what? I can't help but think these threads are people who engaged in serious misbehavior in the 70s and 80s complaining that a group of mates want to stand together.

My Liverpool supporting pal tells me the Kop ran with piss during games in the 60s and 70s. Not due to excessive consumption of Ribena.

I'm old enough to remember that too. In my opinion, the fighting was largely between those that wanted to get involved - it was possible to walk right through the middle of it sometimes without any hassle. There are more bellends being abusive within/to our own support recently in my experience.

I think you are correct but it seems to reflect what's happening in society as a whole , it's not a generation thing either just an expansion of entitled knobheads across age ranges. Last week my car broke down, had to get it recovered, the recovery driver was attacked because a 45 year old (?) knobhead wanted him to move immediately and when he was asked to wait a minute or two (or take a simple turn which would get him to same place) the angry driver attacked the recovery man. Same as the two knobheads sitting next to me who feel their opinion is the only one that which matters.. Funnily enough one of those is a coach as well.

I used to have four pints in The Stadium before every home match. But that was four pints of 3.4% ale.

Now it all seems to be a bit stronger - 4 pints of 5% stuff gets you a lot staggerier than back in the days.

I'm given to understand that pop/rock concerts in the 60s used to run with rivers of piss.
Maybe people just had less control in those days?

Having watched the video, can't really buy the self defence argument. The first one or two are certainly, but he then remains in place and throws punches of his own. I was there and the stewarding & policing of the away section was poor and should have prevented confrontation.

Instead of loads of police located in the away section doing absolutely nothing they should have been deployed in the aisle Athens fan side of the away section. Simple.

I don’t think the events will be perceived by local people as a particularly big deal.

The OB just generally wait for a massive brawl so they can get stuck in, and if they support one of the rival clubs they’ll happily stick the baton on the home fans, I’ve seen it in Italy and Hungary as well. Our safety wouldn’t be number one on the agenda.

People in the Brighton part of the upper tier on the right side started it. People on the Athens side responded eventually after I guess they got fed up with the tedious behaviour of the numbskulls in our stand.
